A hoppy ale characterized by a sudden violent hop outburst, often accompanied by a tirade of strong language and unexpected gyrations of the face and mouth due to hysterical enjoyment

Crisp clear golden and light amber coloured body with a thinnish, soapy two centimetre tall head. Aroma of alcohol, resin, grapefruit, grass and some floral hop notes, all with a bit of sugar and some moderate yeast. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep grassy, herbal and resinous hop characteristics with a nice malt backbone, some subtle peach and pomelo sweetness, but quite a lot of bitterness noticeable from the hops. Aftertaste shows some good alcohol notes, a pleasant level of complexity and solid bitterness on the end without being too cloying. Overall, a surprisingly nice Imperial IPA that I wasn’t expecting much from the ratings here. My bottle shows a good deep bitterness without being pungent or showing too much alcohol. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 02-August-2013 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washington on 22-February-2014.

Pours an orangeish-copper with smallish head. Aroma is primarily one of malt. Flavor has some nice hoppy bitterness, but overshadowed a bit by the malt--other brewers have done a better job of balancing the two and Atwater should go back to the drawing board.

12oz bottle. Murky, deep red-orange, approaching burgundy. Thin, steady, off-white head. Odd aroma, maybe deteriorated a bit? Resinous, almost burnt smoky hop edge. Bitter orange-pine notes. An awkward IIPA, not really nailing the style. The scorched earthy caramel tones dominate. Not outright bad, but certainly not that respectable of an offering.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled June 2012. Pours a hazy orange amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some good foamy lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of caramel, bread, grass, orange, mango, pine, earth, and herbal spiciness. Pretty good aromas with decent strength and balance; a bit too herbal and grassy. Taste of orange, grapefruit, pine, caramel, biscuit, floral, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of orange, grapefruit, pine, caramel, grass, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a bit. Good flavor balance; with a nice malt/bitterness balance as well. No cloying flavors or astringent bitterness; a pretty clean finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming after the finish noticed. Overall this is a good DIPA. Some good hop/malt balanced flavors, and very smooth to sip on. Quite pleasant and enjoyable for a DIPA. It is unlike most that are in your face with a lot of hops and bitterness.

Sampled on draft at the Headkeeper this beer poured a murky orange-caramel color with a medium sized creamy orange-white head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was sweet pine, resin, lemon, orange, faint tropical fruits and table sugar. The flavor was dryish table sugar with moderate notes of pine, orange, lemon and faint tropical fruits. A bit rough on the hoppiness. The finish was dry pine with a bit of alcohol coming through. Medium body. Ok.

Darker appearance than most IPAs. Lacks the typical DIPA hoppy/citrus, but I like the slight maltiness.

Bottle. Murky orange-brown body with abundant sediment, medium to thin clumping beige head. Nose of grassy, floral hops and caramely sweetness, toasted sugars, and caramel corn. Soapy, resinous, muddy body with initial sweetness and bitter hops opening up to nutty cereals, candy corn, and tannic leafiness. Muddy palate, dirty and inelegant. Not a big fan.

Bottle. Pours a dingy light brown with a decent sudsy head and very nice aromas of citrus and pine with some pineapple and honey sweetness that promises some sugars to balance out the sharp hops. First sip reveals a blast of hops up front that gives way to a little fruit, caramel and grain dust before finishing bitter again. This is very nice stuff, especially considering some of the misfortunes I have had with Atwater in the past.
