Imperial Malt Liquor Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Too Classy for a Paper Bag. Here you have what could be the first malt liquor worthy of a glass. Typically a slighted style, we thought we would class it up with a stay in the wood and a healthy dose of dry-hopping. A huge hit of corn gives this one a smooth sweetness while its time spent aging in bourbon barrels will give you reason to share. Be warned: this one will kick you where you most expect it.

You had me at 14.2. And malt liquor that is barrel aged? What kind of bizarro world is this? The 12 oz bottle was acquired at my favorite beer retailer in the Petroplex. I release the cap from the bottle and take a smell direct. It gives a faint caramel and honey nose.I pour half into a heavy glass mug with a handle, a nice clear amber-tinged gold, a thin white head promptly maintained by a steady carbonation. Take a sniff to see if it changes things. Yes, a bit better and fuller. There is grain, alfalfa, hard candy. What can a drink bring? Much better than the scent. Malt, caramel, bread, a dollop of the bourbon, like no malt liquor I have had before. And a steady burn from the first drink until long after. Aimed at the high side of the low end. Mission accomplished.

355ml bottle online from *ahem* Beerhawk. Pours pale golden with a slim white head. Aroma: heavy malty, boozy, toffee, floral. Taste: heavy malty, heavy sweet, light bitter, boozy as hell, toffee, caramel, oak. Medium bodied, light carb, sweet finish. Pretty full on, like a mega boozed up barley wine on steroids. Pass me the lemonade!

Shrewsbury Beer Exchange Group meeting in Chez sophie on 20th Feb 2018; 355ml bottle from Paolo, cheers mate. Thin white head on the clear golden body. Boozy stuff, aroma had a malty molasses leaning, the taste also malty sweet; all the time the alcohol is showing, which I actually quite liked. Most likely the first American Malt Liquor I've had that didn't need to be drank on a park bench from a brown paper bag!

355ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Feb 18, thanks to Paolo! Pours clear gold, small white head. Aroma has quite a boozy hit. Taste is initially quite boozy, strong but is followed by a nice calming fruitiness that dispels any fears of a harsh alcohol afterburn. Pleasant and does not taste its strength.
