Hemel & Aarde is brewed with the most heavily peated malts we could find. Not for the fainthearted. This powerful brew overwhelms you with smoke, chocolate and coffee. Flavour indication: smoke, chocolate, coffee Translates as Heaven & Earth

24/11/2011 La tana (handpump). Nera, densa, impenetrabile, schiuma abbondante, cremosa e morbida, color cappuccino. Aroma intenso di malto tostato, con note di luppolo, vaniglia, cioccolato, caffè, e un bell’affumicato. In bocca risulta dolciastra, maltata, con un retrogusto amarognolo caffettoso e un bel finale affumicato. Corpo medio, consistenza oleosa, carbonazione soft. Buonissima ed equilibrata.

(Bottle, 0.75 l - bottled 7 Dec 2011, at William K Kurvi, 20120424) The beer poured pitch black. Its head was quite large, light brown and long lasting. Aroma had smoke, peat and roasted malts. Palate was full bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, smoke, peat, hops, coffee, ash and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty, ashy, peaty, smoky and bitter. Nice peaty imperial stout with a bit too burnt finish.

10% abv bottle from the 5 December 2011 batch. 25 year best by date. Pours with a near black black, deep brown hued body with a gigantic tan head. Aromas are of peat smoked malt, earthy, flint, scotch, caramel, bready malt, lightly floral, intense smoke (chlorophenol esque), light biscuity notes, bacon, caramel, maple with little yeast presence. Flavors are earthy, soil, alcohol, bacon, peat malt, bbq, caramel, milk chocolate, mocha, chocolate covered bacon. Lots of smoke, with grilled meat notes (melanoidin I guess). Medium (albeit a bit too much for such a big beer) bubbles, full bodied, smokey, dry duration, warming and big. I have never been the biggest smoked beer fan, but this is pretty solid. Very warming.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours really dark with a foamy 4 finger tan head. Aroma of chocolate with a hint of peat. Med body. Flavor starts peat, goes chocolate, goes peat, goes anise, gets darker chocolate. It’s dry and astringent. Which suggests the lapsang souchong. I wonder if my mouth will ever feel free from this, but why worry. This is great.

330 ml bottle courtesy of Stefan. Pours black with a brownish white head that slowly dissipates while leaving some lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet and tiny salty with peat, vanilla, smoke, dark bread, wood, liquorice, roasted malts, dark dried sweet fruits and hints of alcohol and yeasty ester. Taste is sweet, bitter and tiny metallic with peat, coffee, bitter chocolate, smoke, whisky, dark bread, prunes, soup stock, wood, roasted malts, wet earth and some alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, slightly silky and full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet and bitter with coffee, peat, smoke and wood.

Bottle. A real gusher. Dark brown/black liquid with huge tan head. Aroma of peat, coffee, chocolate, licorice, smoke, wood and earthy hops. Taste is light to medium sweet, light to medium bitter and roasted with notes of coffee, peat and chocolate. Medium bodied with too much carbonation. Nice but a bit too much smoke for my taste.

Bottle at Håndtverkerstuene. Pours black with a light brown head. Aroma of smoky, roasted malt, dried fruits, coffe and chocolate. Lovely smell for those of us that loves Islay whisky. I think this is an excellent Imperial Stout! Sweet with a lasting peaty and smoky taste, just like my favourite whiskies. Alcohol is noticable and bitterness is low, but this is a very good beer!
