Pastry stout by this popular Dutch stout specialist, intending to mimick gingerbread. Thanks to Craftmember for sharing the can - but I didn't take notes, so this one will have to be re-rated as soon as I get my hands on a sample. Thin mocha-beige head on a pitch black beer. Very strong, spicy aroma, a wave of fresh cloves and gingerbread, cinnamon, nutmeg, melting 'fondant' chocolate, Christmas cookies, gingerbread indeed, toffee, whisky, pipe tobacco. Sweet, candied onset, chocolatey and thickly toffeeish malt body with roasty-coffeeish accent but remaining largely sweet, deeply soaked in heavy gingerbread spiciness with again cloves, dried ginger and cinnamon featuring strongly and dominating; thick bittersweet maltiness heated by whisky-like alcohol in the end, but the alcohol does remain well hidden at this strength, possibly also because the spices overwhelm. The kind of beer you'll either love or hate, I guess, with a very outspoken personality, but as other breweries in especially Scandinavia have shown, this kind of Christmassy 'winter spicing' does often work well in a big, bittersweet stout. As a Belgian, I had my fair share of heavily spiced strong winter beers in all those years, but admittedly this one has an altogether different profile and went down dangerously easily.
