There has been a hype around low alcohol beers in the Low Countries recently, fuelled by the international success of session IPA but extending well beyond IPA territory, and many of the more 'artisanal' producers have chipped in as well as the more established (family and other) brewers - with this one being Brasserie de la Senne's contribution, a 'table beer' (tafelbier) brewed in collaboration with Magic Rock, hence the name 'Magic Tafel'. Thanks to tderoeck for this bottle! Thick, bit irregular and uneven-bubbled, disparately lacing, egg-white head slowly breaking here and there over a hazy, straw-hued apricot blonde beer. Aroma of dried old lemon peel, soap or even bath foam, dirty and dusty polyester doormats, lemonbalm taken from an old herbarium, unripe mandarin, old cardboard boxes, soggy white bread, moldy cereals, lemon verbena, dry hay, pumice, minerals and, briefly and faintly, a hint of Bretty 'horseblanket' as well. Spritzy onset, sweetish and sourish but both restrained, hinting at starfruit, lemon zest and unripe banana, lively carbonation with minerally effects adding 'fullness' to a lean, slick, soapy body. This soapiness - clearly from wheat, with an added subtle sourish edge - continues well over a bready and grainy, dryish middle, into a firmly hop bitter finish, with earthy and leafy, but also citrus pith-like effect, grapefruity and still quite refreshing, though it must have lost most of its citric fragrance by now. Pumice-, soap- and bread crumb-like aspects join this quite long-lasting hop bitterness. As the brewery admits itself, brewing a low ABV beer with a lot of flavour is anything but easy, and I think that in this case, Senne has performed well at the task, as this is a pleasant one to drink in which I do not have the feeling that I am missing out on something. That said, with the bottle being almost two years old now and well past its expiration date, it is also becoming notably 'dusty' and cardboard-like, with the hops having turned stale (like an old dusty bag of 'herbes de Provençe') and having lost most of their aromas; I have no doubt that this one was a lot better when fresh, but I guess I'll never know. Still I'm glad to have covered this gap in my Senne experience and I did enjoy drinking it, to a certain extent, due to its confident bitterness, relative 'fullness' for being less than 4% ABV and that vague touch of Brett lurking around somewhere - though remaining elusive in the end.

Bottle. Funky, dusty aroma, grassy bitter notes. Hazy golden, low white foam. medium light, foamy mouthfeel. Salty dry, some bandaid, salty finish, light grassy notes. Past its prime unfortunately.

Flaska från Etre Gourmete. En lätt, torr, krispig citruspackad blond saison. Massor av frisk grape. Den perfekta sommardrycken. Mycket gott.

Bottle at Firkin Alehouse Folkestone. Hazy pale gold colour lasting white head. Funk farmyard aroma. Good light lemon like lemon barley water on saison. It's a curious light mix of hops saison lemon. Interesting.

0,33l bottle at home bought from Etre Gourmet. Bottled 31.05.2018. BB 31.10.2018 (i think I recieved this one way past end of ocotober). light yellow rather hazy color, small white head. smells earthy, belgian yeasty, light berry notes, some exotic fruits, bit flowery, citric. very nice smell. light body, obvious carbonation, rather light mouthfeel. taste earthy, belgian yeasty, very light exotic fruits, citric, light biscuits, doughy, spices, peppery, some esters. finishes rather dry and lightly bitter with notes of belgian yeast, citric and some earthy notes. Very good one, loved the smell. taste is good too, but has almost a bit too much carbonation for the rather delicate body. could be also that the flavours are not as bold as they used to be. overall very good to drink, rather on the dry side.
