Authentic amber ''Bière de Garde'' made from raw materials exclusively from Nord-Pas de Calais. This characterful beer is amber-coppery in color. It has a rich, slightly caramelized taste and fine bitterness. It is typical of the amber beers that make the reputation of the North of France. The hops used are Brewer's Gold and Strisselspalt.

bottle. clear amber, quite small white head. grassy, slightly fruity , caramelly slightly malty aroma, reminds me clearly of french biere de garde. flavor is caramelly, malty, sort of fruit peely bitter, and alc. a little fruits, and some metal. Alc. seems to be a bit too high, given the other flavors are quite mild.

Bottle, 75cl. It’s a nice-looking amber beer, clear at first, but with some clouds when getting closer to the bottom of the bottle. A quite lively carbonation leaves a two-finger, dense, beige head. Some lacings occur. The aroma is dominated by mixed dried fruits, apricots, prunes and dates, with some underlying cellar, white sugar, fresh fruits and a whiff of alcohol. It’s full-bodied, smooth and a bit too effervescent. Slightly warming too, especially in the finish, which is also sweet, fruity and with some toffee. The flavor is maybe a bit too sweet and sugary, and that drowns the complexity and layers found in the aroma. Sugary dried and fresh fruits might be a description to sum up the flavor experience. Add some boozy alcohol to that picture. Overall, a decent beer indeed, but I wish it was a bit less sweet and alcoholic. One more thing, the label doesn’t mention any sugar added, but gluten! Strange! Well, I had no problems finising the bottle, neither this time nor the last time I had one. 101001

750 c&c from Berkeley Bowl West. Pours orangey amber with a 3 finger foamy beige head. Strange aroma - malt and something suggesting diacetyl. Medium body with strong carbonation. Flavor is heavily roast malt with no trace of diacetyl, and a fairly bitter aspect. "for those who eat the taste of mystery"? In the end it’s fairly malty and smooth, but there’s enough hop to make it balanced. Suggestive of an "imperial" amber.

750 ml swingtop bottle, from Vinmonopolet, nettbutikken. ABV is 6.9%. Deep golden to amber colour, big to moderate white (or slightly off-white) head. Spicy and herbal aroma, hints of flowers and honey too. The flavour is fairly sweet and malty with caramel and moderate hops, hints of honey, the alcohol is noticeable. Lacks the crisp freshness of the Hildegarde Blonde.

Bottle. Amber pour with a soft, white head. Very malty aroma, some spices. Flavor holds more malts, some light fruitiness, sweet caramel, bread and yeast, all-spice, some bitterness towards the end. Medium body, mellow carbonation. Pretty nice.
