31/5/2024. From cask at the 37th Colchester Real Ale and Cider Festival. Pours very dark brown with a small bubbly off-white head. Aroma is roasted, malty, nutty, chocolate, toffee, molasses. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness and body. Oily with soft carbonation. Much better than expected based on previous reviews.

Cask at Standing Order, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a small cream head. The nose isn’t pronounced, but there’s some roast malts there at least. The immediate sensation in the mouth is of liquorice, quickly followed by dark fruit flavours and roasted bready malts. Later on some coffee comes through as well. Finish is dry and fruity. All in all a rather nice beer

Handpull cask at the Blue Boar, Leicester. Pours opaque dark brown with a massive beige head. Aroma besieged by dark malts, well-done toast, some bitter chocolate. Balanced taste with notes of plum and a gritty bitterness to balance out the sweetness. A slight vegetal character mars the finish that little bit but it's a pretty good beer all in all.

Cask @ The Abbey. Pours dark ruby with a clerical collar of white foam. Not sure why this is classed as a Belgian Ale. And the pump clips says 5.9%, not 7.5% Rich?? Hm.. Aroma here is moderately sweet dark malts, liquorice. Taste is smooth with dark malts, liquorice, leather and coffee hints.. generally clean with low bitterness.

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at the Seven Stars, Bristol 3/5/2016. Dark brown, with a thin, beige, head. A malty beer, with some brown sugar, dark fruits and a gentle, slightly boozy, finish. Fine.
