From tap at Café DeRat, Utrecht. Aroma is strong caramel with toffee, brown malt, coffee and mocha. Reminds of "Haagse Hopjes". Above medium sweet flavour, alcohol nicely hidden. Body is medium. Imperial Brown Ale? Tasty stuff.

Tap at Mikkeller Tallinn Old Town. Med-thin body, medium carbonation. Lots of coffee throughout, with little else to be found here. Surprisingly watery, with weak malt character, coffee only. Also not the cleanast coffee in beer ever, got a bit of leftover used coffee bite to it. Overall not bad, ABV hidden well too, but rather boring, does not keep you hooked.

Dark barleywine by this familiar and experienced Swedish craft brewery, from the typical stubby Brewski bottle. Medium thick, mousy, membrane-lacing, slowly dissipating, pale greyish beige head on an initially clear, deep bronze-glowing mahogany brown beer, dark but allowing a warm glow of reddish amber to shine; misty with sediment. Aroma of dusty dried plants in an old herbarium, caramel, old dusty cardboard, tea bags, brown bread, iced tea without the sugar, bayleaf, clove, ginger cookies, old rusk, soggy biscuit, dried fig, dry sherry touch somewhere (onsetting maderisation, I suppose). Sweet onset but nowhere annoyingly cloying, balanced by a sourish undertone; lively, prickly carbonation, but 'refined' enough not to interfere with the flavours too much; medlar, fig, some pear, announcing a full, unctuous caramelly maltiness to come, showing some old-walnutty and brown-bready aspects and carrying a toasty-bitterish side too, developing a bit in the end - but without crossing over into Scotch or porter regions. Spicy aspects of clove, cinnamon and nutmeg subtly show up in the end, highlighted by warming, brandy-like alcohol, clearly present yet not forcing itself onto the flavours so very well in place for this kind of beer. Tea-like hop bitter accent and dried fruit linger, but this dustiness from the nose remains very present too, as in old dried plants or even tobacco leaves - quite weirdly so, and this particular aspect did take me a while to get used to. The overall tasting experience was however a positive one: this malt-forward dark barleywine with quad- and slightly Scotch-like features was clearly a bit past its prime, but still managed to charm.

Bottle from Deconinck. Clear brown with a stable, frothy, tan head. Aroma of chicory, mocha, red apple, stewed pear, plum, hard caramel, liquorice, dried tea leaves, fig. Taste has sweet apple, fig & plum, bit caramelly over a herbal-earthy coffee middle with metallic & nutty edges. Malty, earthy hoppy finish, coffee, caramel & dried fruit lingering, as well as heating liqueur alcohol. Medium to full body, oily texture, average carbonation. It has that 'a bit of everything' character but it was very rich & tasty.

Weicher Kaffeebeginn. Milde Süße, viel Malz, geringe Herbe. Süffig, leichte Noten von Schokolade, minimal herb. Würzig kaffeeartiger Abgang. Lecker! 11/12/12/12/7/12
