One of these countless small batch ’Proef’brouwerij beers from before Mikkeller and the like engulfed so much of their production capacity, this one made for a local scouts group in Wezemaal; apparently discontinued in 2008 so should be put on retirement. Vintage bottle from some private collection. Moussy, off-white, stable head over an ochre blonde beer, murky from the start; was originally intended as a Belgian blonde but got already a bit darkened by age. Aroma is - unsurprisingly - overpowered by heavy oxidation, rusty, but actually not unpleasantly maderized as well, next to hints of overripe pear, stewed plum, brown sugar, soggy sandwiches, iron, old orange zest, sweet cider, caramel, dust, dried apricot. Sweet taste of old red apples and old orange peel, light sourish touch, softish carbo; residual sugary sweetness over a bready and lightly caramelly middle, very yeasty and ’dirty’ finish with lots of oxidation. Obviously way too old for this type of beer, but still drinkable, not even truly off-putting (proportionally speaking) - or, better put: I had worse beers of even lesser age in more or less the same style category.
