Brewed for tap walls overrun with the white noise of West Coast IPA’s, here’s an offering so exotic, you’d think it was from another world. Like its namesake before it, the axis deer of Southern Asia, so too has this species (beverage?) of hop-forward animal magnetism come to invade the landscape of IPA’s that have long held sway over the taps of Texas’s finest watering holes. Tropical fruit, citrus, and a pale golden body, help keep this breed light on its feet. And with few natural predators there is little anyone can do to stop the spread. IPA may not have been born in Texas, but it will soon seem as native as the sky that stretches between its borders.

Ember draught, 3/25/23. Clear! Oh God, a real IPA?! Small, white head, low retention. Somewhat muted nose, light alcohol maybe? Peach, apricot, white bread, playful pine. Not resinous. Soft and malty, big pine resin backbone though it doesn't quite get sour and biting from it. Hmmm, I suspect this is not going to be my thing. Just rather austere and monotonous, though in the grand scheme of WC IPAs, it's way above average. Good attenuation, good malt depth, clean. Loooootttttaaa pine.

6-pack of cans picked up in Austin, Texas. A very slight hazed, golden colour with a touch of amber. Frothy, mildly creamy, white cap, very good retention and full dirty foamy lacing. Malty nose with some hoppy notes. The hops really stand out in the taste with deep bitterness. Very grassy. Not dry to the max though. Definitely an IPA.

Tap at Austin Airport, 12th December 19. Flight is delayed, but I’m not getting on it until I finish this beer. Pours a clear straw colour. Aroma is citrus, pithy and loads of grapefruit. Taste is clean and bitter, pithy grapefruit, grapefruit juice, bitter lingering finish, simple and classic west coast IPA, pretty good actually.

Tap at Hippies & Hops at Austin airport. Bright golden/orange pour - slightly translucent with fine white head. Aroma is orange citrus, pine, some peach. Taste is solid pine bitterness, with good orange zest flavor, biscuit and bread. Very tasty, a pleasant surprise of an airport beer.
