Innovative and surprising. After a visit to a Porthous in Porto the idea rose to use the same method to produce a 'Porto' out of beer. A specially brewed barleywine is , after a few days of fermentation, put to strength by adding grainalcohol. The fermentation is put to hold with lots of remaining sugars. The sweet 'reinforced' barleywine is the aged for multiple years on oak barrels and, in the proces 'portorized'. For now available in 3 year- , 4 year- and (December 2020) 5 year version.

Bottle. Almost black, but with a red haze. Toffee and port in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with roast, toffee, oak, vanilla, licorice and Porto. No carbon whatsoever. Alcohol is well integrated. Quite complex.

Dark brown and oily with no head. Aroma has dried fruits, mushroom powder, cork. Flavour starts with obvious Port notes. Doesn't carry through though. Finish is short and slightly too boozy.

Super-strong barleywine by Dochter van de Korenaar created with port wine in mind and indeed containing actual port, to arrive at a port-equalling ABV of 19%; bottled in port bottles with the same type of resealable stopper cork – always handy on a big bottle of beer this strong. Some loose, off-white bubbles thinly form around the edge upon pouring, but they disappear as quickly as they came, leaving behind a completely headless, hazily dark burgundy-hued beer with yeast dots suspended inside and a ruby-red glow when held against bright light. Aroma of tawny port indeed and a whole lot of it, walnut liqueur, caramel sauce, old oxidized madera, reduced gravy, vanilla-scenting mature oak wood, gingerbread, moist black pepper, honey, bread crust, maple syrup, bayleaf. Sweet onset, sticky date syrup and candied fig effects, light touch of beef stock-like umami, hardly any carbonation at all, very full, syrupy, thick body. Caramelly and peanutty maltiness shines through the port nicely and even blends with it, but that thick layer of tawny port dominates a bit especially when in the end, a warming alcohol effect as well as drying woody tannins and retronasal oak-like vanilla emerge. Caramel and port linger, with only the faintest echo of a leafy hop character – but the impressive thing here is that at 19% ABV, the alcohol does not become too hot and abrasive, keeping this beer and port blend highly drinkable. Interesting experiment by the Dochter, and enjoyable – if you like both port wine and barleywine. Good idea to put it in port bottles with stopper cork too, that way one is not obliged to drink the entirety of it in one session, and the oxidation which is allowed into the liquid this way, can only add interesting evolutions in taste (like it does with e.g. Sam Adams Utopias). Glad I bought this one in spite of the hefty price tag.
