During a concert break at Cafe Oto I went around the corner to the 40ft Brewery and had a half pint on draught of this one. Black body, covering off-white head, fragile lacing. Inviting on the nose with chocolate malts and caramel, roasted. Tasty stout with hints of dried fruits, liquorice and chocolate malts. Nicely roasted ending, Pleasing (London, 27.02.2026).

Can from Lorna. It pours darkest brown with a khaki head. The aroma is rich and robust, dark roasted malt, toasty warming spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, plump dried fruits, booze soaked raisins and definite Eccles cake vibes. The taste is quite crisp and dry upfront, dark roasted malt, earthy, toothy, light acidity, washed coffee, dried fruits, raisin in particular, fruit cake, touch of toasty sugars, festive spice and cacao nibs with a drying, toasty finale. Average body and fine, prickly carbonation. Captures the character of the infamous St John's Eccles cake. Interesting and quaffable.

Can from lowcostbeer.com, consumed 4 months past BBE. Pours black with small tanned head. Aroma of all spice is the first thing that hits you, followed by a dark malt, molasses and raisins. Taste manages sweet, tangy and bitter combined. Dark malts come through quite rich, cardamon, clove and nutmeg are notable, semi-dry with cocoa dusting. Good but I'm more liking it than loving it, maybe slightly too rich for me.

Keg at the tap. Aroma is sweet and spiced. Dark opaque cola brown. Thin creamy beige head. Spices are prominent - popping over the top. Underlying dough. Hints of coffee bitterness. Medium bodied. Slick. Soft carbonation. Long finish. Not normally keen on overly spiced beers but this works.

4 January 2020. At Dok Brewing Company, Ghent. Shared with the lovely Anke! Pours hazy dark brown with a lasting, small, foamy, tan head. Aroma of mocha, toffee, raisin, pistachio, dried tea leaves. Taste has sweetish raisin, toffee, bread, interwoven with sour blackcurrant and a subtle nutty, 'nutmeggy', coffee-like bitterness. Drish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering dried fruit, mocha & spices. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Interesting Stout for sure, all elements blending well.
