This American Amber Ale is light amber in color with a slight citrus, malty nose. Moderate malty flavors with low hop bitterness make this red a very drinkable beer.

On tap @ Henrik, Bergen. Pours dark maroon, with a small creamy mocha head. Aroma is oak, dark fruits, berries, as well as some yeast and grain. Creamy body with light texture and soft to no carbonation. Flavour is tart on the border to sour with yeast, wood and a grainy not very fresh notes of barnyard reminiscent of acid reflux. Sweet fruity finish.

Draft. Brown/amber. Lightly hopped; roasted malt, smooth. I can’t put my finger on the underlying flavor: hints of caramel, grapefruit.

On draught 3/19/05 at Kuhnhenn. Orange-amber-auburn colored body, very cloudy, but not as deep a red as was the Radical Red (but that’s why it was radical, right?). Eggshell colored head is full and lasting. Aroma of bitter, dry hops, light earthiness and then plenty of toasted malt. Notes of smoke creep in to the nose as well, quite surprising, yet unmistakeable. Like cured, dry firewood, it has a clean smoke aroma, not salty in anyway. A shade of fruity yeast lurks behind all of this. Flavor is fairly dry, with the smokiness from the nose increasing in the flavor, especially at the start of the beer. Pale malt and caramel malts add a restrained malt-sweetness, while the fresh hops work with the toasted grains to dry out the flavor considerably. But it has such a strong body that the flavors all meld together well. No alcohol apparency, dry, toasty/smokey finish with hops bitterness, but not much hops flavor. The bitterness seems to work against the beer overall, however. In the Radical red, the creamy, honey-sweet malt and thick body held the biscuit and toasted grains in check, with juicy, flavorful hops not drying it out much. This one needs more fruity hops and sweeter malt to get some of the dry, papery, husky astringency off the palate.
