Czech-Style Dark Lager
A traditional Bohemian style rarely exported out of Central Europe. A session lager with the malt backbone of a Munich Dunkel and hop schedule of a Bohemian Pilsner.

An at home finishing my lager themed weekend. More amber hued than description. Nose is herbal and caramel. Tastes of caramel, plum, white grape, herbal, earthy, toast, peppery. Crisp and lingering spicy finish. Very refreshing.

Imagine a dark pilsner? This is it. Black body with off white head. Grassy aroma. Malt forward body with a good hop edge. Crisp finish. Last tin the market had.

Pours deep clear mahogany into a shaker. Tan head with medium retention recedes leaving scant sheets. Dark earthy caramel malt aromas. Dry with dark caramel and anise upfront turning to mild earth in the medium length finish.

Can pour from trade with Johnnnniee--thanks, John! Appearance is gorgeous clear dark amber with trace sparkle, 1/2-finger-width off-white foamy head with decent retention and trace lacing. Aroma is rich roasted malts, hinting of coffee and chocolate. Taste echoes aroma with late pilsner malt. Mouthfeel is light side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, lively (slightly stinging) carbonation and finish as taste with lingering dry bitterness. Overall, good depth of flavor and aroma with some interesting complexity. Level of carbonation detracts a bit.

Can from the Packie, Deep amber color with brilliant clarity and a huge frothy white head that slowly dissipates. Rich bready crackery maltiness with hints of raisin and plum with some light toasted white bread. Earthy spicy floral hops to counter. Tasty beer but seems to be missing the dark color and flavor of a Czech Dark Lager. Feels more like an amber lager or Polotmavy.

Draught at Publick House, 8/12/15.
Dark hazelnut with nice bronze tints, good clarity and a small but well-retained beige head.
Nuttiness, very spicy hop notes, light chocolate-creme and a crisp, dry finish highlight this modest and very clean aroma. Really nice to not see, "for this tmavy, we thought we’d put a twist on a classic and use American hops." The twist, nowadays, is that you used European hops in your classic European style.
Light chocolate and nougat notes are immediately ushered out the door in place of delightfully spicy, herbal, zesty hop notes. Average, appropriate bittetness, ample carbonation and a very nicely attenuated medium body. A bit of buttercream-like maltiness returns on the finish but the snappy hops keep it quite refreshing. A really nice drinking beer if you still want a little more malt presence. Flawless and wonderfully well-made.

Sample.at the source. Darker amber color with full lasting retention. Aroma has a bold amount of Munich malt, light lager yeast and light smoke. Wow... The brewer nailed the style! Crisp hops balances the stronger Munich malt with the lager yeast still noticeable. Very well crafted and very easy to drain the glass on a warm summer evening.
