Sour Brown Wild Ale

Mare Nectaris (“Sea of Nectar”), named after a lunar sea, is a rich and bright beer, complex in both malt presentation and lacto sourness. While not an Oud Bruin, this beer derives inspiration from Flemish brewing traditions.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a ruddy amber color with a finger’s worth of foamy white head. Slightly dissipated to leave some messy lace.
The aroma had some tart green apples, raisins, vinous mustiness, dark bread, black cherries, funk/basement, some acidity, mulch, leather, dried leaves and butterscotch.
The flavor was semi-sweet and added a little bit of bubblegum with some grassiness. Some acidity. All seemed to blend together to lead into the aftertaste and ride on into the finish.
The palate was about medium bodied perhaps just a touch under and having a good carbonation about it. ABV felt as projected. Mild acidic harshness, but wasn’t distracting.
Overall, nice take on one of those Flemish styled \"oud bruins\" and by an American brewer nonetheless. I’d have this again.

Sampled at the Granite State Brewers Fest. Slightly hazy dark brown color. Lightly tart with some faint puckering. Still some sweet bready and caramel malt in there to balance the sour lemon and tart cherry. Pretty tasty.

Draft at the source. Pale brown in color, no head. Aroma is salt, acidic notes and lacto notes. The flavor is what the aroma suggests; that salt, notes of cherry skins and a light lingering sourness in the finish. Very approachable for a person who doesn’t like the style. Could be a nice introduction to the style for somebody who has never had it.

Draught at the brewery, early March 2015
Indeed a bright maroon colored body topped by a light beige head that recedes to a ring rather quickly. Pretty high clarity, with just a touch of haziness.
Lactic in the nose, with some light cherryskin-like acidity, raisins, light mustiness and some crusty brown bread. No diacetyl, doughiness, alcohol or anything unwanted noted. Medium strength of aroma overall. This isn’t jumping out of the glass with fruitiness and acidity but what’s there is elegant and enjoyable.
I think it fares even better flavor-wise, with well-attenuated maltiness providing an almost chewy structure and adding brown bread and biscuit like notes while sour lactic notes define the beer and yet help soften the malt dryness. Tight carbonation and a comforting texture with bursts of fruitiness (cherries, raisins, berries) and lip-smacking acidity on the finish. Somewhat reserved, but still very well-done.

Reddish brown, 1 finger head. Cherry Pie and mulch on the nose with a light tartness, citrus and minor saltiness. The taste is actually similar to the gose here but the finish is much tarter and longer lasting and you get a defined kiwi/cherry finish.
