Ghent, in its own quiet way, has been breeding a number of exciting young brewing companies in recent years and Hedonis is certainly one of those. This session IPA bears a medium thick, off-white, lightly lacing head which soon breaks open in the middle but retains well on the edge; initially clear, warm and pure orange blonde robe, turning all cloudy (but in a neat kind of way) and darker orange, eventually even a bit brownish amber, with sediment. Aroma breathes New World hops galore, with impressions of stale lime juice, moldy oranges, soft paprika powder, diluted pine resin somehow, soggy biscuit, withering dill leaves, minerals, dried mango but subtly so, pineapple slices, hints of fresh Thai basil leaves, rainwater, fresh green lettuce, raw salsify, vague pink raspberry somewhere. Lively onset with quite a lot of ’clean’ fruitiness, hints of dried mango, unripe banana and red apple but all subdued, sweetish with a balancing sourishness of gooseberry to it; supple, lean body, modestly carbonated but just about right for the style, yet still inevitably thin due to the low alcohol strength. Softish cereally malt middle with a very light but, welcoming caramelly touch to it, effectuating malt sweetness, with fairly little of the initial fruitiness carried to the finish, where the hops provide generous retronasal orange peel, lime juice and pink grapefruit aromas, but alas, insufficient bitterness to create ’body’, so that this beer ends very aromatic and elegant, but thin and a tad watery. I think applying a bit (just a bit!) more bittering hoppiness would do this beer good, but in this form, this is a more than decent, accomplished example of a beer style which is still way too rare in Belgium these days - in spite of it having become a big hit in countries where the ’American’ craft beer revolution has gained more ground, not counting America itself. Not quite at the level of Founders’ All Day IPA or some of Karl Strauss’ or Pipeworks’ creations in this particular style, a bit too thin and watery for that, but from a more local point of view, a welcome addition to the Belgian beer scene, something I’d heartily recommend to people next time I’m on a pub crawl through Ghent and a decent second to Totem’s Cojico within this specific style.

Dark blond colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour have some citrusy and tropical fruit hop notes. Light and thin bodied but flavoursome.

Draft glass @ Beerlovers Bar. Hazy orange, creamy white head. Nose is orange peel, faint cobwebs, bitter pine & white pepper, big hop profile, very solid smell. Taste is bit less, herbal, plastic bitter, some paper-like qualities, dough, bit musty, paper malt, less hoppy but still pretty good especially for the abv. Body is dough & paper. Not perfect but a very admirable low ABV beer & this from Belgium of all places.
