This deep amber ale has an intense hop flavor balanced by a complex malt character. The yeast’s fruity esters blend perfectly with the citrus hop aroma.

bottle - Pours amber with fine, suspended yeast and a two finger white head. The aroma is of citrus and floral hops. The flavor is intensely hopped with citrus and a hint of earthy and herbal tones. There’s a solid malt backing. Between the bitterness and the very evident alcohol, it comes off as rather astringent. A similar brew with the alcohol character smoothed out might be better. Still fairly good.

Bottle from ericandersnavy. Pours glowing ruddy copper with a foamy 3 finger off-white/beige head. Damn. Smells like barley wine. Lots of roast caramel and a good dose of resin hop. Medium body with foamy carbonation. Then the flavor kicks in - and the first burst seems chocolate. There’s malt roast. There’s an awful lot of hop. Still going with resin. The head is going clingy ringy, and an earthy note pops up. Really smooth for a red. And the hop just keeps going on and on. I’d say the heat isn’t significant - just suggestive. A really good beer.

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s this beer poured a dark orange-amber color with a large beige head that lingered. The aroma was nutty with a moderate fruity hop presence that was a tough rough and there was a faint nutty caramel undertone. The flavor was nutty caramel and fairly bitter with a rough fruity hop presence, a touch of roasty malts and a long dry bitter hop finish. Moderately full bodied. Solid.

Bottle. pours a clear copper amber with a large frothy off white head leaving good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is very hoppy with grapefruit and floral. Medium mouthfeel with a smooth hop and resin with a nice bitter finish. Hides the alcohol extremely well making it easy to drink, a very good American strong ale from Harpoon,

Pours deep orange red into a shaker. Creamy off-white head pancakes and recedes leaving spider lacing. Resin and pine aromas. Sweet, thick pineapple and caramel upfront turning to pine and resin in the lasting bitter finish.

A reddish amber ale with a thin off white head. A very classy c-hops aroma, pinhey and resinous. In mouth, loads of malts, hops, very oily, smooth and enticing. On tap at ChurchKey DC, Feb. 26 2010.

Bottle. Pours with a large off-white head and a slightly hazed bronze-amber colored body. Aroma of alcohol, pine and slightly herbal hops, grass and light unripe pineapple. Very dry malt aroma, a small touch of caramel and a few fruity-probably-alcohol-produced-esters. Taste is bitter and alcohol. Some table sugars and a citrusy finish. Some grain astringency and warming. Long duration...really long. Bitter and fruity. Creamy carbonation, big presence, medium to dry residual sugar finish. A really impressive Harpoon beer!
