Reddish amber ale brewed with "berberé", an Ethiopian spice relatively similar to paprika. The juniper berries bring a softer taste and balance well with the "berberé".

One of many one-offs by Beerstorming made in collaboration with individuals interested in designing their own spiced beers, in this case juniper berries and berberé, an Ethiopian equivalent to paprika powder. Snow white, lacing, slowly opening head, clear coppery amber robe with lively fizz. Aroma does reveal the presence of both paprika (the berberé) and juniper berries but not too overpowering, fitting in with other impressions of walnut, soap, white candi sugar, chamomile, roses, apricot. Clean onset, restrained fruity notes of apple and apricot but - like the other Beerstorming beers I tasted at the brewery - low in esters, bit fizzy, very soapy mouthfeel, resinous even, with a lean, even thin nutty malt core, bit toasted in the end with the resinous spiciness building up to a juniper berry effect which, in all, stays relatively gentle; a paprika powder sensation shows the presence of the berberé; a mild spicy hop bitterish touch supports this. Again, interesting as a concept like their other brews, but lacking in body, fruitiness and hop character. A less thin beer would probably support the spices better but admittedly the spices are used subtly enough not to ruin the whole palate, which is not always the case with spice beers.

Draft @ Beerstorming, shared with 77ships.

Draft glass shared with Sebletitje @ brewery. Dark orange amber, little white head. Nose is faint moldy malt with lots of dusty kitchen spices, low paprika, touch yeast. Taste is lots of mellow lightly dusty kitchen spices, paprika, faint turmeric for me (that is wrong), low stone fruit, milky yeast. Beer & body are a bit empty, served tad too cold for me but this is a decent showcase of the spice blend that they used which we got to smell.
