Baird Nihon Kouji Sour Ale Batch #4 mikan This beer has a Kansai connection as it also seems to be named “Base Station Kansai Celebration Ale”. It’s got a matte orange brown color with a fuzzy off white head (that was actually a slow gusher on opening). The aroma is citrus blossoms, yeast and a bit of tart wheat. Medium to light bodied with a raspy carbonic bit and a tangy mikan citrus flavor, sweet tarts and crackery wheat. It pairs well with apple pie. All in all a nice brew though not terribly sour.

Bottle from Yamaoka. Batch #3, including ume. Nose is a bit faint, plums, bready malt, sake-like koji. Golden orange, hazy and lots of floaties with a low head. Flavor is tart plums, rich golden honey malt, umami. Probably not a kettle sour, but soured by the plums. Mild but tasty and rich. Good balance too. Light and crisp. Strange, grainy after taste came out as it warmed that was a bit unpleasant.
