The name of the beer is derived from the British newspaper that was printed in the Ypres casemates during World War I. It celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
The 16 in the name refers to the density of the beer (16° Plato). After Grotten Santé and Wipers Times 14, this is the third beer of Brouwerij Kazematten.

*rating overgezet 2018* Het is een troebel roodbruin bier met een dun schuim. Het heeft een kruidige en fruitige wat kersenachtige geur. De smaak is zoet, fruitig wat kruidig met een licht bittere afdronk.

The third Kazematten beer, honouring the hundredth birthday of “The Wipers Times” after which the brewery itself is named – a local newspaper aimed at the soldiers fighting in World War I. Flavoured with elderberry and elderblossom. Thick, frothy, egg-white, closed and stable, pillowy head lacing in shreds over a cristal clear, orangey ruddy-amber coloured beer with some strings of vivid sparkling here and there. Aroma of chewing gum, red Haribo candy, elderberry jam in an industrial way, butterscotch, flower wine (the elderblossom no doubt, but again in an artificial way), rosé, soap, cooked cloth-like pasteurization, caramel, iron – quite an industrial and artificial affair really. Same goes for the taste: clean apple- and banana-like fruitiness, bubblegum, spritzy and minerally carbonation, a bit numbing even; sweet and slick, with a caramelly, bit resinous middle deeply drenched in a particular ‘candied red fruit’ sweetness, almost candy floss-like and artificial, contrary to the ‘real’, often fleshy effects I have encountered in many other elderberry beers. Ends sweet, metallic and only very mildly bitter, with a vague sourish undertone and lingering caramel sweetness. Cooked to death and recarbonated it seems, artificial and with the elderberry added in a sweet, somewhat sticky, ‘fake’ way – this may appeal to larger masses that still enjoy industrial, pasteurized, sweet Belgian candy floss beers, but not at all to me. Worse than expected, to be honest.

Hazy, red to brown colored, medium frothy beige head, nice lacing. Aroma is quite fruity, cherry, some spicy yeast, malt, bit caramel and sugar. Taste is medium to very sweet malt, caramel candy sugar, fruity cherry, bit spices, light yeast, light bitterness. Medium+ bodied, soft carbonation, bit creamy. Maybe bit too sweet, but fruitiness is quite nice. (On tap, St. Arnoldus, Ypres)

750 ml bottle into signature chalice, bottled in 10/2016. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy reddish orange/copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lightly tart elderberry, strawberry, peach, plum, lemon, orange, cherry, pear, red apple, melon, herbal, floral, grass, and toasted bread; with light notes of caramel, nuttiness, coriander, cardamom, anise, fennel, peppercorn, clove, funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/light spicy yeast, bready malt, elderberry/flowers, and light spice notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart elderberry, strawberry, peach, plum, lemon, orange, cherry, pear, red apple, melon, herbal, floral, grass, and toasted bread; with lighter notes of caramel, nuttiness, coriander, cardamom, anise, fennel, peppercorn, clove, funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Mild yeast spiciness, herbal/spice bitterness, and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Fairly crisp finishing. Lingering notes of elderberry, strawberry, peach, plum, lemon, orange, cherry, pear, red apple, melon, herbal, floral, grass, toasted bread, caramel, nuttiness, coriander, cardamom, anise, fennel, peppercorn, clove, funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/light spicy yeast, bready malt, elderberry/flowers, and light spice flavors; with a nice malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from tart/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and slightly sticky/tangy/acidic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.2%. Overall this is an excellent fruited/spiced Belgian red ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/light spicy yeast, bready malt, elderberry/flowers, and light spice flavors; very smooth, crisp, and pretty refreshing to drink; with the mildly tart/spicy/drying finish. Great balance of malts, yeast, and elderberry/flowers; with pleasant background herbal/earthy spice notes. Never overdone. A very enjoyable, unique, and well made offering.

On tap at at Katzematten Brewery, Ypres, Belgium, Saturday 4th November 2017. Pours reddy amber with a white sticky head, the fruitiest of the beers from here thus far, still a touch sweet, but a nice berry edge. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov14 3.4
