Fast gone cream head over orangey copper beer. Nice smoked nose, Islay malt without the alcohol, even Lapsan Souchong, toasted malts, dried ham. More smoke, more Lapsan Souchong, more smoked ham, beechwood and BBQ/smoker additions. Despite a light body, still enough punch. Low to medium carbonated. Very good. Lightly smoked, yet satisfying.

Another limited ’boutique beer’ with black and white label by Andy’s Vliegende Paard brewery, those are really hard to catch up with... Top-fermented Rauchbier with medium thick, off-white head retaining as a firm moussy edge and as a thin veil over the middle, slowly showing gaps; hazy peachy orange blonde robe with quite lively sparkling, turning misty and deeper amber with deposit. Aroma has unmistakable smoked malt (mouth-watering smoked bacon as well as smoked paprika powder), olive oil, roses, fresh cigarette tobacco, dried orange peel, fresh toast, grass, dried apricot, soap, fried egg, chicken spices, ripe gooseberry, hints of banana peel and stale ’armpit sweat’ (excusez le mot). Spritzy, crisp onset, minerally carbonation is the first thing that meets the tongue but calms down quickly, subdued fruit sweetishness (dried apricot and some very subtle banana ester again) with an underlying redcurrant sourishness; the sharp carbonation coarsens the mouthfeel a bit, but the overall body remains lean and smooth, with a backbone of nutty malt ’bitterish sweetishness’ in its core. The smoked malts effect unmistakably pops up somewhere in the middle and increases towards the end, yielding a retronasal smoked ham and smoked paprika effect in a not too obtrusive way; its smoky flavor is then cleverly fused with peppery, leafy hop bitterness, a combo which makes for a dry, quenching, spicy ending, with only a thin trace of the fruitiness and malt sweetness piercing through. Hop bitterness gets the last word and sticks to the throat for a long time. Apart from a few ’sweaty’ and soapy elements in the nose which I think do not really match up, this is still an accomplished Rauchbier in my opinion: it delivers sufficient smokiness without overdoing it, refraining from becoming a one-trick pony as is often the case with this particular type of beer. For me personally, the Belgian yeast traits, in all, work quite well with the smoked malt effect, but I can easily see how some of my esteemed colleagues below expected something more radical along the lines of the traditional Bamberg Rauchbiers. But those are lagers, and this one is essentially still a Belgian (blond or even amber) ale adorned with a Rauchbier-like character, rather than making the smoke the essence of its existence. If you look at it like that - and like smoked malt - then surely this will not disappoint.

Flaska från Etre Gourmet. En ganska lät och lite fruktig rauchbier. Kanske p g a belgisk jäst. Inte så långt från en klassisk bambergöl men lite lättare rökighet och kropp. Trevlig.
