BLAUW is an export beer, a beer type of bottom fermentation that was very popular in the 1950s. At that time, heavy manual labor was very important and the workers drank beer regularly.

At that time, export had a lower alcohol percentage than the regular lager and it was always offered in 33cl. That way they could drink more beer, without their work performance having to suffer.

Today, the export beer from Brewery Omer Vander Ghinste is called "BLAUW", because it was the color of the clothing that the workers were wearing to work. It is still offered in bottles of 33cl, but now has the same alcohol percentage as the lager. (5.2% alc.vol.)

BLAUW is brewed exclusively with natural raw materials: water, corn, barley malt, hops and yeast. Without the addition of preservatives, BLAUW therefore has a limited shelf life (9 months) and is preferably consumed as fresh as possible.

330 ml. bottle @ Greenway Antwerp. Sparkling hazy golden, little lager head. Nose is mellow iron, dirty grains, fizzy, corn & more metal. Taste is dull iron, strongly metallic industrial lager, fizzy grains, stale old cheap grains, corn,… Metallic fizzy. Got a tad hard to drink towards the end. For an industrial pale lager this is much better than average. It didn’t bother my burger taste-wise.

Bottle (Petalax). Golden color, small white head. Musty, a bit fruity grainy aroma. Light-bodied. Harsh, grainy, light sweetish bulk lager. Short finish. Crap.

Bottled. Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is grains, some stomach acid sweetness as well. Flavour is grains, some herbal and mild starchlike sweetness. Cheapo feeling.

Clear golden colour. Aroma has a touch of sweet malts. Fairly crisp and clean pilsener. Preferable taste compared to some of its more heavily marketed pils-peers.

*Old rating. Best before 13.11.12. Nice fresh and easy to drink Pils. Smooth with a mild and fresh grainy body. Not very deep, nice and round, sessionable!

’Export’ in the old Belgian sense of the word, so a standard pale lager in 33 cl bottles, tasted some twelve years ago when it was still named Bockor Blauw. Not completely the same as their Bockor Pils but you’d have to taste them side by side to note the micro differences between them. This one seemed a bit softer, less metallic and fruitier. Enjoyable but nothing special.
