MASSIVE! Barleywine is released every year. What makes this beer so distinctive, and gives it the great depth of flavor, is the 8 hour long boil technique. The kettle at Gigantic is heated by a burner, essentially a blow torch under the kettle. This high heat caramelizes the wort, and the long boil intensifies that caramelization. The recipe changes every year, using different malts and hops, but the technique remains the same.

Keg at Andrew Usher’s. Clear ruby body with a thin off-white head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of shoe polish and overripe plum. Flavour of mashed strawberries, caramel and raspberry syrup. Full body with a chewy, sticky mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Drinks easily for the strength but the aroma is weird.

Tap. Magic Rock Tap. Clear, ruby tinged, amber. Ring, and a film, of off white head. Nose has sweet, honeyed, stewed fruit hop. Rich, sweet, lightly spicy malts. Notes of dried vine fruits. Some stone fruit. Taste is sweet, rich, and vinous. Full bodied, chewy mouthfeel. Long, chewy sweet, vinous finish. Very nice, dangerously drinkable, not overly complex, barley wine.

Dark mahogany color with barely any head. This is not your typical American Barely wine: aroma and flavor are very "fruity", it’s sweet but not cloying, it’s malty but without heavy toffee presence, fruity caramel, no fresh oak/bourbon/vanilla, not nutty, moderately bitter, with gentle alcohol warmth in the final.
More similar to strong Belgians, such as Stille Nacht pre-2003, than to Barley Wines.
Excellent sipper.

Draught @ CBC2015. Pours caramel brown with a small frothy offwhite head that doesnät leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and slightly boozy with caramel, sweet dark bread, tooffee, moist grass, dried pine needles, alcohol and hints of glue. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter, malty, tiny fruity and slightly boozy. Mouthfeel is round, viscous, syrupy, boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and tiny bitter with sweet dark bread, caramel, toffee, grass, dried pine needles, ammonium chloride, alcohol and lemon peal. Decent but very hot.

Draught@CBC2015 (blue session). Reddish amber colour with a small beige head. Aroma is sweet malts, some ripe sweet dried fruits, mild sugary notes as well as some wood and alcohol. Flavour is quite similar, but the sweetness is balanced up by a rather bigtime hopping to it. Wellbalanced, and very drinkable BW.

Clear brown caramel colour, off-white head. Aroma of hops, tropical fruits, roasted malts and toast. Bitter hoppy flavour, quite sweet, brown sugar. Finish malts, pineapple and caramel.

Thanks! to DutchDrebus. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT XIII. Deep red amber. Nose is weird herbal bitterness mixed with cough syrup, mocha, light cherry, candy. Taste is herbal bitterness mixed with thick malts, sugar, light syrup, herbs, candied fruit,… Big syrupy body. Interesting, touch odd in a good way. Good brew.

Bottle @ ZZT XII. Clear amber color, small off-white head. Aroma is malts, huge sticky resinous sweet hops. Taste malts, sticky resinous hops, alcohol, sweetish. Full body, medium carbonation. Intense.
