Bottle shared with Countbeer, train tasting. Opaque black color, average sized light brown head. Aroma is quite pleasant, malts, soft roast, dark malts. Taste malts, dark malts soft roast, slight toffee, slight liquorice, a slight hint of left over sugar but in balance with the overall bitterness. Medium body, average carbonation. Not bad.

At Diesters Bierfestival. An attempt at RIS... Medium thick, creamy, light beige head, colour is a very dark ruby red, blackish but still completely translucent - which is not what I expect from an imperial stout. Aroma has a lot of liquorish, apart from butterscotch, cold black coffee, cardboard, chocolate liqueur, cinnamon, dried banana, brown rhum and varnish-like phenols, in all pleasant but lacking in ’black maltiness’. Same for the taste: candied cherry sweetness at first with a vague sourish touch, soft carbonation, lean, resinous and smooth mouthfeel but clearly too thin body for the intended style, caramelly with a light roasted coffee bitter accent in the end as well as some peppery hops and a dash of warming, rhum-like alcohol. This is a very pleasant beer for sure, but not a stout in the true sense of the word and certainly not an imperial one. Have a point for the original and informative label, though.

Bottle from Belgian Beer Shop, Leuven. Dark brown beer, dark brown foam that disappears quickly. Soft carbonation. Roastiness with sweet notes of caramel. Typical Belgian imperial stout but drinkable and not bad at all!

Belgian Imperial stout... The thought itself brings shivers to my spine. Even though we have some of the best ( Struise, for instance ) , Belgians do suck, usually, in stouts ( let alone imperial ones). The pour immediately agrees with me. Clear, dark brown, not thick at all. Foam dies very fast, but used to be small and a darker shade of white. Smell is straight roasted grains. Simple, but OK. Taste is intense, aromatic dark malts with much coffee, oats, roastyness. Some aspects of very, very dark chocolate that build up towards the aftertaste. Rather bitter. I think many ( as in too many ) dark malts were used here, since the taste is very intense on that side, and not really balanced anymore. Besides the lack of a good MF of an Imperial stout, and the too light color on the pour, the taste aint too bad though... It proves indeed that Belgian still has a lot to learn in this style, but at least this outcome was better drinking than I expected... Lets just dont call it Imperial stout, OK guys ? ( kinda insults all the great Imperial stouts of this world )

330 ml. bottle @ home. Purchased @ Willems & Zoon. BBF 01/01/2018. Black, light dark brown, small mocha head. Nose is very sweet heavy liquorish, dark sugar, caramel, thick very sweet syrup malts but liquorish dominates. Taste is herbal, thin, grainy, strong liquorish, herbal, light paint thinner alcohol, cheap chocolate syrup, molasses, chemicals, strong paint thinner, chemical,… Thin, paint thinner, grainy, cheap syrup body,… A very Belgian RIS in all the wrong ways aka very heavy liquorish, thin, herbal, overly boozy,… It isn’t terrible but it really isn’t what it should be.
