The Hacienda was the club at the middle of the Manchester Indy music scene in the late 80s/90s. So when Claudia from the Independent Manchester Beer Convention came down to brew a collaborative beer for their 2014 event with former Britpop band frontman and Weird Beard brewer Daniel Vane, it seemed an obvious choice for another music-related beer name. Hacienda is also the Spanish word for estate or plantation. With that in mind we created a saison with some dark grains for colour, hops with a big kick of orange in the flavour and aroma, and the addition of some Seville orange peel in the kettle and the fermenter.

12/08/2015 - 33cl bottle @Erwin’s boat on the Schelde. Thanks for sharing. Great evening Dark brown to black with light tanned foam, nose is bitter roast, some fruits. Taste is bitter roast, mocha, some oranges, dry hoppy finish. Actually loved this.

330ml bottle. Opaque, darkest brown colour with huge, thick, firm, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Spicy, fruity, tangy aroma makes a reservation for a tart taste, notes of roasty dark malt with a grainy touch and hints of milk chocolate, some brine, gherkin, vinegar, orange zest, pollen, latex paint. Taste is roasty dark malty, minimally chocolately, a touch of liquorice, bitter hoppy overtones, some bitter orange, orange zest, maybe some peppercress; non-appearance of the anticipated tartness, not much Saison-character in taste at last. Nevertheless a good beer.

Huge, towering dark beige head, irregular bubbled, over virtually black beer. Dry hops, sweet roast, Ketjap Manis( sweet soy sauce), roastglazing, faint lemonzeste. Dry sweet-hoppy flavour, sweat, again soy sauce or other oriental sweet-sour-roasted flavouring for roast duck or that ilk. Feels rather well-bodied (certainly for 7% beer), quite slick. OK: 1) this is NOT a bad beer; by far 2) what this has to do with saison is an enigma to me 3) but above all, please don’t get me started on what an "Imperial Black Saison" might be...

Bottle thanks to nihtila. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - chocolate orange and white pepper. Slight Grand Marnier note. Taste - chocolate and nuts. Bitter orange finish. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - really interesting beer. The nose is the best but.

330 ml. bottle purchased @ Bierhalle Deconinck. Shared @ train-ride post ACBF 2015. Black, little mocha head. Nose is bitter roast, umami, soy sauce, lightly herbal, bitter coffee; Body is a bit fizzy. Herbal, thick molasses, soy sauce, light liquorish, chocolate, coffee, not picking up on orange peel unfortunately still not bad.

Bottle from the Grumpy Goat, Reading. Black with a large, lively beige head. Soot to the forefront, plenty of sweet, spicy Belgian yeast and a little dark chocolate. Think they left the oranges out of my bottle. Like the yeast but overall the soot is a bit over the top. I prefer my beer less burnt than this.
