BIERE DE GARDE is a style from Northern France, malty, strong in alcohol and with a lean body to enhance drinkability. Our Astrolabe displays a deep red color and exhibits a toasty maltiness and caramelised dark stone fruit flavour. This is the kind of beer that would have been drunk in high quantities by the sailors of the famous french ship ASTROLABE who arrived in Australia eight days after the first fleet.

To be served in a balloon glass or wide tulip glass.

Perplexe.

(Can) Pours clear deep red brown with thin short-lived beige head. Aroma of toffee, candy, hints of bread. Light body with good bright carbonation. Unusual, complex and good taste. Dark toffee provides a backbone. There’s some burnt sugar notes at the end, and some raisins and funky hints at the start. The alcohol is well hidden. Unusual, interesting, but maybe a bit too unusual.

Can, bb 6/19. Clear deep red with a rapidly fading beige head. Rather shy aroma of sticky breadcrust and spices. Pretty thin for its strength. There's caramel and some dried fruit but no richness or depth. Fairly bitter and a bit spicy at the end. A bit more malt is revealed as it warms but it still feels a bit mean. I wonder if it's as intended.

From a 440ml can on 8/4/2018 (shared by Butz with thanks). Pours a clear dark red amber with a pretty big head. The nose is light but pleasant enough, with some malt and fruit. Flavour wise, there's some caramel malt followed by a good dash of fruity sweetness, particularly berries and cherries. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Drinks lighter than 7.4% for mine. I've had bugger all farmhouse ales to date, so no expert on the style, but thought it a decent enough drop.
