Carling Black Label has been quenching South Africans’ thirst for over 40 years. As one of the most awarded beers in the world, it has built a reputation which is hard to ignore.
A quality brew The beer itself is one of the stronger lagers in South Africa with a clean, refreshing taste. It has a spicy hoppiness complemented by lightly kilned malted barley. There are also subtle fruity notes in the aroma and taste, adding to the depth of the beer. A dense white head and straw-coloured body characterise it.

0,33l from bottle. Yellow clear color, small white head. Smells peppery, earthy, veggies, grainy, caramel. Not great smell. Light body, soft carbonation. Tastes light struck, peppery, earthy, malty. Finishes lightly bitter with notes of tobacco, off notes and pepper. Bad, too many off notes

340ml bottle. Clear, yellow-ish golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Rather expressionless, grainy, strawy, pale malty aroma, a minimally bready touch of white bread crust. Taste is slightly floral and minimally soapy hoppy, pale malty basis with a touch of brioche, subtle sweetness, subtle fruitiness. Watery texture, minimally dry palate, medium, mildly prickly carbonation. Very weak aroma, surprisingly flavourfull taste -OK.

[33cl can from the South African shop at Victoria Station] A straw coloured pour with a thick whitish head; sweet grainy aroma; sweet grainy taste with a touch of grassy bitterness. Nothing special, but exactly as I remember the British version from 40+ years ago.

Quarantine Beer #017 sampled at home on 03/16/2020. Clear pale gold color with a thin white head that burns away quickly to a thin outer ring. Sparse strings of lace. Fruit, malt and cardboard aroma. Light body with flavors of grainy malt, yeast and citrus. The finish is sweet with a malt and stale fruit aftertaste. Below average overall.

0,33 flaske delt med Kitty på hotellrommet i Johannesburg feb-20: klar gylden med fint skum som varer. Med litt velvilje kjenner jeg kanskje litt malt og humle. Lett syrlig avslutning. Surpremely boring.

330ml can. Pours a clear ochre with a thin white head. Aroma is sweet grain and cooked vegetables. Taste is similar with some paper thrown in for good luck. Light bitter finish. Rather sad. Can reads “champions deserve champion beer” - well I’d hate to try “loser beer”.
