Carling Black Label has been quenching South Africans’ thirst for over 40 years. As one of the most awarded beers in the world, it has built a reputation which is hard to ignore.

A quality brew The beer itself is one of the stronger lagers in South Africa with a clean, refreshing taste. It has a spicy hoppiness complemented by lightly kilned malted barley. There are also subtle fruity notes in the aroma and taste, adding to the depth of the beer. A dense white head and straw-coloured body characterise it.

330 ml can. Clear, very pale golden with a big, fast disappearing white head. Aroma of sweet grain and corn. Flavor is some kind of sweet grain and sour. Not much bitterness at all. Thin body and weak aftertaste. Not a very nice experience.

Can. A clear one, pale golden in color and topped by a small, white head. Lightly unpleasant aroma, but it’s mostly hay, grass and pale malts. Very weak. The flavor is equally weak and boring, grass, hay and grainy pale malts. Medium body, soft carbonation, quite dry. The flavor is dry and faintly bitter, with some grass notes. A quite decent one, but far from impressing. 130204

Clear golden coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall white head. Aroma of pale malt, lemons, very light hops, apples and a bit of metal - fairly nice, actually. Light-bodied; Sharp metallic notes with malt, iron, funk, basement and a hint of light lemons noticeable up front. Aftertaste shows malt, alcohol, funk, mushrooms, lemons, apples and a ton of metal in the palate - with perhaps a refreshing note, due to the lingering light malt. Overall, not a bad beer of course, but just not one that stands out - a decent beer to sample very easily in South Africa. I sampled this specialised (Kaizer Chiefs special can) 33 cL can purchased from Skukuza Rest Camp in Kruger National Park, Nelspruit (or Witrivier, if you will), South Africa on 21-August-2011 for ~ZAR7,00 sampled at home in Washington on 12-January-2013.

Aroma smells like skunk and hops, some sugar too. I’m Not entirely sure on the appearance as I drank two of these straight from the can, and I doubt many people poor them into a glass anyways - it’s hard to do from a tailgate, or in a dark African bar! Tastes like water and hops with some animal smells and corn. Not at all appealing, even for a low end beer.... and even though it’s won plenty of "awards" over its lifetime! This is a poor brew at all levels and you can do much better at this price range. Basically, it’s crap. Not the worst crap, but still crap.
