A beer of mixed fermentation for the first time brewed by Felix Van Roost in1869 of Brouwerij De Palmboom and named Jack-Op, in Werchter. In 1953 the brewery went into bankruptcy and was a year later taken over by Caulier from Brussels and later by the Brasserie de Ghlin. Brewing in Werchter continued till 1965 when the brewery was closed. The production of Jack-Op was transferred to Belle Vue, which was acquired by Inbev in 1991. Brewing by AB Inbev continued till 2008 when they stopped brewing the brand. But the beer did not vanish because since 2010 it is brewed - still under license and control of AB-Inbev - by Frank Boon. The addition of lambic matured in oak barrels deepens the taste of the beer and contributes to its long shelf life.

Dark blond. Quite sugary sweet and malty. Thin body. Light sharpness in the finish. For an "amber wheat beer with added oud lambic" this is quite plain.

Bottle at home, done from memory, rating is just for my own. I will edit if I drink it again, interesting light sour beer.

Bottle. Clear amber color, medium white head. Aroma is straw and caramel. Taste is thin with subtle sweet sour notes. Much thinner than I remember the original one to be.

25cl bottle, BB 16.10.2013. Brewed under InBev licence by Boon ... the wish to recreate old beers ... what a program.

Covered in a thick layer of dust & with the label nearly fallen off leads me to believe that this bottle is already quite old, possibly dating back to 2010 even. Once a popular student beer, brought back a while ago, commissioned by InBev but brewed at Boon these days. No idea as to how popular it is with students nowadays… Blend of a beer of high fermentation and lambic. Pours a hazy earthly amber with a sickly off-white head. Smell is that of burned caramel, candy sugar, burned brown sugar, lightly earthly, vintage notes, light oxidation, more like a faro than anything else (& not a stellar one at that) with no lambic in the nose.< br> Taste contains vintage notes, some oxidation, burned brown sugar & caramel, cough medicine, sweet malts, thick candy sugar, light orange peel, sweet grains and some meciine. Touch fuller, young beer body with less carb. Bit more like an off-putting faro than anything else to me. Not as dreadful as the Boon faro. Sort of got into it by end, might work as a student beer for serious sessioning, wouldn’t really like to try to be honest. (Green bottle. 25 cl. bottle @ Kulminator. No BBF date printed.)

Clear amber colour, white head. Malty aroma, biscuit, dough, caramel and sugar. Sweet flavour, malty, biscuit. Malty finish, pizza dough, light mint, hint of funk.
Quite fresh beer. Enjoyable.

Not as good as the old one. Medium carbonation. Malty taste and sweet with some sour notes, but these are far away. Drinks easy (i.e. watery), but no character.

Very good yellowish head over nearly clear pale amber beer. Wood, lactic acid, seafood (no DMS, however, I guess), faintly lemony. Very bitter head, but sweet, nearly caramelly flavour in the beer; pale. Light, watery body and a bit sticky finish. Disappointing. I preferred the historic version (and YES, I had the original Van Roost, if very aged).

15/04/2011 25cl bottle @ home - BB: 5/10/11 (2011-150)

Little cloudy orange to light amber coloured beer, white thin head, unstable. Aroma: hops, like a pilsner, touch of sour as well, hint of thyme. MF: soft carbon, light body, watery texture. Taste: little malty, bit bready, hops and a touch of lemon. Aftertaste: hops, just a little though, some citrus. Pretty low in flavour, I had hoped for at least a bit more of lambic in it. :(
