Pouring soft, silky black beneath a seductive tan head, Porter Solera Gran Reserva is a classic Porter brewed with all of La Virgen's usual finesse exclusively for Beery Christmas 2017. And to mark the festive season, the brewery infused this special Porter with 10-year old Solera Gran Reserva Brandy from Spain's celebrated Williams-Humbert distillery.

The bouquet is full of rich, warm coffee and chocolate malts, with a backnote of oak barrels and warm leather. This theme is replicated on the tongue, with a creeping alcohol warmth and vinous brandy note that draws the tasting experience to a truly satisfying crescendo

250ml bottle. Opaque, dark brown colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, mostly lasting, moderately lasting, beige head. Fruity, minimally funky and vinous aroma, dark malty background, hints of mustard, fermenting blue grapes, a touch of cocoa. Taste is dry, dark malty and fruity, minimally funky, tart-ish, hints of cocoa, blue grapes and corresponding parings, a touch of mustard. Probably not infected, but a bit strange.

Pours dark brown, some beige foam forming a relatively steady head. Aroma has some light roast malt, bit of caramel, light chocolate. Taste is more interesting, chocolate is stronger, more caramel and dark fruits, plums, figs. Medium bodied, quite fruity and soft/creamy texture to it. Decent porter but nothing to shot about on the rooftops. Barrel not really there.

250mml bottle as part of the Beery Christmas 2017. Dark colour with a low beige head. Aroma of mashed potatoes, barley and bread (not brandy oak barrels). Taste is soy sauce, grains and bread. Finish is dry with some caramel aftertaste. Next one please!

Beery Christmas #10. Pours lovely, almost black, with a nice sheen of foam, most of which dissipated rather quickly, leaving only a fine layer. Aroma surprised me a lot; at first it is very acidic and fruity, not what one usually expects in an (imperial) porter. Also roasty, notes of oak and smoke, fruity coffee and chocolate. Medium body, acidic mouthfeel. Flavour is sourish, but not as intensely as aroma. Rather it is nicely balanced with a great roasty maltiness, a lot of roasty flavours, quite some smoke somehow. Brandy is really noticeable too, gives a certain smoothness to the beer. Oak is also pronounced, even though it was not barrel-aged, only infused with brandy as I understood it. Finish is long and lingering, fruity and smooth, with a warming brandy touch. Wow, this really impressed me, mostly cause it presents a truly interesting twist on the style I wasn't expecting. Really acquires a vinous/brandy kind of feeling whilst still being a porter. Huge drinkability too.
