This dark beer unleashes the beast that is locked inside the darkest basements of your soul. This stout spends autumn in Scottish whiskey barrels that give it its woody and nutty aroma with a smoked hint. The lingering sourness fights the bitterness of the wood and the dark malts to create a nice harmony. Accept that your no longer a goody-goody and act a little “stout”.

Dark brown colour, beige foam. Earthy, tart, notes of vinegar, smoke, peat. Rather tart and bitter along with some smokiness.

The third and newest Oakey Moakey variant, this time aged on Ardbeg and Ardmore barrels (and bottled in 33 cl bottles), big thanks to Leopold! Thick and frothy, irregularly lacing, yellowish beige, eventually dissolving head over a very dark chocolate brown beer, almost black in general appearance, with a hazy, burgundy-reddish tinge. Very earthy nose: loam and humus, forest floor, damp tree leaves, moist peat but not as expressively so as I was expecting, soaking wet wood, sour apples, sherry vinegar, blackberries, soggy grey rye bread, nut shells, hint of wet chocolate, balsamico, passionfruit, background accent of anise. Estery onset, blackberry and redcurrant sourness with a vague sweetish maracuja touch to it, sharp edges with the sourness initially enhanced by spritzy (yet refined) carbonation but softening later on; lean, supple brown-bready malt base with a hard-caramel edge to it and eventually acquiring a toasty bitter edge, soaked in tannic woody effects, lactic tartness and spicy phenolic effects mingling with the peatiness, which again remains relatively soft compared to what I was expecting. Lingering sour fruitiness (blackberries) and a lot of the announced, loam- and forest floor-like earthiness in the end. Very earthy beer indeed, not an easy one for the big masses, but that of course was never Verzet’s intention (at least not in this series) so a very interesting beer for the connoisseur – I loved it, and I also loved the fact that the peated whisky effect remains altogether subtle, adding more deep earthiness than iodine-like peatiness.

3 February 2019. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke & Pieter! Hazy black with a small, slowly thinning, frothy, beige head; little lacing. Aroma of vinegar, sour cherry, wood, balsamico, dried fig, raisin, port wine, coffee roast, earth, blue plum, smoke/peat. Taste is medium fruity sour, cherry & balsamico in balance with woody tannins, and light malty sweet, notes of raisin, plum, some chocolate, building towards a woody bitter core that offers vinegar & smoke. Dryish, bit tart finish, vinegar again, woody, more dried dark fruit, subtle warming whisky alcohol, only vaguely smoky. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Still very accessible in terms of flavour, even with quite challenging whiskies like that, but then again the amount of peat is only limited here, which leaves me wanting more. Needs to tone down on that carbonation too...

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy irregular off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: sourish impression, some vinegar, soft roast. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: very sourish, vinegar, soft roast, bit metallic, acidic, unpleasant bitterness. Aftertaste: very sour, some tannins, dry, metallic, vinegar touch, lemon juice, little fruity, where's the peat in this one?
