NEDIPA with Galaxy, Azzaca and my beloved Simcoe by Jopen in North Holland, can from an Albert Heijn supermarket. Egg-white, thickly moussey, foamy and dense, membrane-lacing head on a cloudy ochre-yellow robe with khaki tinge. Aroma of guava, pineapple, pink grapefruit, wodka-spiked mango juice, whipped cream, pomelo, some mandarin, pink pepper, spice crackers and a dank whiff of diesel. Utterly juicy from the start, tropical with a crisp citric edge, loads of guava, pomelo and green mango, softishly carbonated with full, creamy mouthfeel; smooth doughy malt core deeply soaked in ongoing happy hoppiness reminiscent of ripe guava, honey pomelo, pineapple and pepino, with a light peppery-spicy accent in the end, even something vaguely grapefruity. The hop bitterness - unexpected in this genre actually - comes late and lingers a bit, but remains mild, though slightly enhanced by wodka-like alcohol, verging on the brink of astringency but just managing to behave elegantly. An actually pleasant bready powderiness ensues. Not a game changer in the huge NE(D)IPA field by any means, but everything works fine here, and the lovers of this style will be served at their beck and call - so no complaints. Jopen is still going strong, in spite of predating the Dutch craft beer movement by eight-odd years and starting off as a rather odd recreator of historical beers; instead of sticking to that original premise, their whole history so far has proven that they have constantly kept their finger on the pulse of global beer trends - merging with the upcoming (and now seemingly completed) craft beer movement rather than fighting against it. They rarely truly excel, in my personal opinion, but they always get the basics right, often with some extras - and that certainly is the case here.

On tap @ Café Lombok, Utrecht. Hazy golden with a white head. Mango, pineapple and grapefruit aroma, so the usual NEIPA suspects. Taste is low-bitter with an similar finish. I have yet to taste a bad Jopen beer and this one is very decent but also a bit safe.
