This beer is a 'sweet and sour old brown', brewed in the traditional way according to an old recipe (approx. 1900) from the Bevernagie brewery from Lichtervelde. The beer is aged in period oak barrels.

Vintage bottle @ Kulminator. Murky brown colour, almost no foam. Very light carbonation. Light notes of vinegar, malty and flat. Sweet notes of candy sugar. Not very good.

Commissioned by a drinks center in Lichtervelde and actually a sweeter and heavier version of Vichtenaar. Loose, beige, thin head, deep red brown colour with yellowish hue, clear. Strong fruity and estery aroma with hints of melon, strawberry, blackcurrant, vanilla, oak, cheese spread, yoghurt, caramel; delicate sweetness in the mouth, caramelly, not cloying, fresh citric and lactic acidity, malt sweetness, sour sweet finish, soft and dryish with a little hop bitter touch. Not their best oud bruin in my opinion, but still a genuine and very enjoyable example of the style.

25 cl. bottle @ Kulminator. BBF 23/09/2006 – 2005 Vintage? 2004? Older? Dark brownish Bordeaux with some light mocha bubbles. Oxidized nose, syrup, coco-cola with some faint grounds / chocolate. Taste is too sweet for me, syrup, coco-cola, lightly oxidized, touch syrup, berries, sweet cherry candy, sugar, sourness is light in the back. Too syrupy + sweet for what I prefer for the style & far too simple, lacks complexity. Ehh…

bottle ( 2005 vintage ) at kulminator pours very dark red, no foam . smells aged ( in a good way, as always at kulmi ) sweetness vs sour taste is still very nice ! typical fob , LOVE it ! with a rather fruity-based side ( even after 8 years) aged FOB = epic !

Bottled. Deep hazy amber colour with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma is sour wood, some fruits and mild notes of red berries. Flavour is sour wood, some fruits, yeast and earth. Feels a bit thin as for the palate.

Cloudy dark amber color. Light sour and fruity aroma. Light body structure, some sweetness, light fruity touch. Ends with some strawberries. Simple among the Flemish Sour Ales, but still quite good.

Bottled (BB 09/2006)
Dark red ruby, small steady off-white head. Aroma of vinegar, coffee and plums. Slightly sour, same time sugary, roasted flavor. Quite "easy to drink" Flemish sour ale.

(Brewed and labelled following the recipe(???) of the former Bevernagie brewery at Lichtervelde) Head gone in seconds, reducing itself to little brownish rim; deeper brown beer with reddish shine. Very vinegary-wooden nose, even a bit too much - smells like vegetable - preserving vinegar. Again vinegar (& woody) and not too refined. this is the taste idea, but much more extreme than St. Jozef at Lichtervelde would have done. Fruity-vinous flavours. Sharp mouthfeel, definitely. Aftertaste is a bit less sharp, much more rounded. It's OK. But I imagine the nose could put off scores of people.
