Broadside was launched as a 6.3% bottled beer in 1972 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from the brewery.

Ingredients: Pale, Black, and Chocolate malts; First Gold hops

Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit. The fullness of the beer makes it a good accompaniment for hearty food.

First time from the bottle? Nutty nose, caramel malt, raisin, estery, fruity funk. Also quite minerally. Dark brown with a tall white head. Flavor is rich caramel malt, toast, light nuts and raisins. Finish is dry and bitter hops. Much drier and leaner than expected. This probably would not make a top 500 list today, but it stands tall as a good example of a classic, probably endangered style. It is rich and malty, yet light and very well attenuated. Low sweetness makes it very drinkable for its weight.

Bottle at Aswarby Rectory, Aswarby. This caught me a cropper with its strong percentage as I expected a bitter. Deep, stormy taste- pronounced bitterness and maltiness.

Bottle from Morrisons. Pours a very dark brown colour with a thinnish creamy beige head. Aromas of fruit cake, dry dark fruits, toasty brown bread and caramel. Taste has more of the fruit cake and caramel with added notes of chocolate and a touch of roasted malts, nuts and brown sugar. Very faint hint of liquorice also on the finish. Very well balanced not too bitter or too sweet. Full body, low carbonation and smooth mouthfeel. Excellent beer.

Muddyish dark brown with a frothy off-white head, and a rich, sweetish malty aroma. The rich malt continues into the taste, carried by a nice smooth mouthfeel, with dark fruit and some mild spice apparent, the bitterness appears and continues into an astringent finish

Creamy off white head stayed on a chestnut coloured still body. Malt & chocolate & cake aroma. Medium bodied, creamy with lighter cloying back. Malt, demerara, some marzipan, cake, liquorice & raisin tastes with fruity finish. Excellent - Can't believe I've never had it before.

Bottle BBE in 9 months. A dark ruby colour with decent frothy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and dried fruit. Moderate body with low carbonation and quite smooth on the palate. Flavour of malts, biscuit, nuts, coffee. A little sweet but not overdone. Finish is bitter and slightly dry. This is flavoursome without being packed with complex notes. However, its extremely well balanced, has depth and is moorish. Impressed.
