Broadside was launched as a 6.3% bottled beer in 1972 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the battle of Sole Bay fought against the Dutch Republic in 1672 off the Southwold coast, just across the green from the brewery.
Ingredients: Pale, Black, and Chocolate malts; First Gold hops
Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit. The fullness of the beer makes it a good accompaniment for hearty food.

Pours with decent foam and heavily carbonated dark brown body. Big molasses and cabbage smell. Flavour is brown sugar, pumpernickel, soft coffee. Mealy on the mouth, chewy, good oiliness. Nice drinker.

At a tasting, small bubbly creamy head, aroma of nut caramel and brown bread, caramel vanila flavor with some nuts, light bitterness. Fair but not too exciting.

0.5 l bottle from 'The English Shop' (Dortmund), bottled in August 2017. Clear, ruby with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, light beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity and a bit herbal-grassy aroma of plums, tea leaves, raisins, some blackberries and a touch of licorice. Quite sweet, malty, slightly bitter, herbal-grassy and slightly fruity taste of molasses, blackberries, plums, tea leaves and some licorice, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, quite herbal-grassy and dry finish. Medium to full body, smooth, slightly oily and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Good!

Bottle at home while watching World's Strongest Man. A good head to the beer and a lovely dark colour. The flavour was all malt and caramel and a big hit of alcohol. This is a classic winter beer and was very good.

500ml bottle [from a trade with Grumbo - thanks a lot Graham!]. Clear, chestnut colour with ruby glimmer and average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white to beige head. Mellow malty and fruity hoppy aroma, notes of cherry and red berries, a touch of plum, malty background with a touch of toffee. Taste is slightly sweet malty, minimally earthy, nutty, a touch of toffee, caramel, fruity hoppy hints of cherry and red berries, some plum. Very clean and balanced.
