As an homage to local film noir, this beer is named after one of our favorite Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, Shadow of a Doubt, which was filmed mostly on location in Santa Rosa in 1943. Shadow of a Doubt is an Imperial Porter with rich notes of chocolate, tobacco, raisins and spice.

Tap @RR. Pours deep black with a medium brown head and nice lacing. Aroma is quite light, roasty, cigarettes, coffee, ashtray. Flavor is light sweet and medium bitter, much the same as nose, not really doing much for me. Medium light body, ABV is well masked, but isnt really adding anything to make it worth its presence either.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, licorice and leather. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long chocolate and licorice finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the brewpub. It’s a dark brown one, topped by a beige head. Dried fruits, roasted malts and coffee on the nose, hints of chocolate too. Bitter flavor, both hoppy and roasted bitterness, with coffee and chocolate and some dried fruits. Full body, soft carbonation. Lasting finish. Sure not bad. Rating: 7-4-7-4-15-3.7. 130806

Bottle. Looking quite nice in the glass with it’s clear, dark brown body and a dense, beige head. The aroma has roasted malts and coffee, with a chocolate touch and some dried fruits. Molasses notes and some fruity notes. A pleasant bitterness in the flavor, with roasted malts, molasses, coffee, chocolate notes and some licorice and cocoa. It’s full-bodied and smooth on the palate, although with a tad much carbonation. Lasting roasted finish. Really nice this one, wonder what I was thinking when only awarding it a 3.7. Sure deserves more. 141025

Growler thanks to Scott. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is light roast and spice. Medium mouthfeel with sweet chocolate and light roast. Easy to drink, a very good porter from RR.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours with a black hued body with a lasting tan head. Aromas are roasty, toasty, nutty, walnut, macadamia, low chocolate and some raisins. Flavors are roasty, toasted, nutty, chocolate, low smoke, rounded dark fruits (dates, rich raisins), a bit burnt, bitter, well hidden alcohol, walnut with tannic skins. Full bodied yet has some higher carbonation with well hidden alcohol.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma is dominated by dark malt - roast coffee with some light bakers dark chocolate. Some faint dark fruit esters are also present including prune and cherry. Pours dark brown with some lighter brown, almost amber highlights. Thick light tab head that steadily recedes leaving a thin film on top and along the edges. Nice thick lacing with medium legs. Flavor is also dominated by slightly sweet dark malts. Once again the coffee note dominates with some faint dark chocolate. Very faint cracker malt note. Low dark fruit esters, but they do as to the sweetness. Moderate bitterness. Medium alcohol spice in the finish. Medium low citrus hop note. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Astringency is moderate and a bit strong for my preference. Alcohol warmth is moderate as well. Finish is surprisingly dry with only a light sticky sweetness. Overall a nice beer with nice roast character but the astringency is a bit high ad the alcohol note isn't super smooth. I think the problem with really big porters is that they can't hide the alcohol behind under attenuation like big stouts can. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
