Tradition meets progress with this classic beer. The flavour of Liefmans Oud Bruin, dating back to 1679, is derived from special malts matured in open vats and matured for between four and eight months. The fermentation is then restarted by mixing older and younger beers together, leading to a more balanced and consistent flavour.

On tap @ Henrik. This is a light cloudy deep dark brown one with her a slight red hue and a medium sized sidesticking big top. On the nose it's as expected quite tart, woody and sour fruity. There is also a strong unpleasantly in the aroma that I'm having a hard time identifying. Almost a sulfur thing? Not sure. It has a really thin and light feeling in the mouth and the carbonation is soft but quite stingy. Woody tart with a ton of sour grains and public swimming pool. Bah, this was a but of a disappointment actually. It's also quite sugary without being too sweet. Tart dry in the first is with traces of bitter bad nuts, old chocolate and mud. Well, no risk of me intentionally purchasing this again. 25.10.2013

Bottle poured into a snifter. Very dark mahogany/deep red, with a small beige bubbly head. Aroma is vinousy, sour cherries. Taste is sour and a bit tart, slight fruitiness, sour fruits, some carbonation and a nice mouthfeel. Overall quite good, although a bit subdued.

Small creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is weird sour-ish, red berries, chlorine, cherry candy. Taste is chlorine, butterscotch, cherry candy, grass. Some acidity. The bad tap lines @ Henrik strikes again!!

Bottle from somewhere I can’t remember. Pours tiny hazy reddish brown with a rather big frothy and creamy offwhite head that leaves some lacing and trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly sour and malty with sweet dark bread, cereal, lemon juice, grape juice, moist wood, hay, barnyard, low quality red wine, dry soil, lemon zest and hints of oatmeal. Taste is sour and malty with dark bread, toasted cereal, red wine vinegar, hay, moist wood, grape juice, unflavoured yoghurt, oatmeal and hints of acetone and rotten lemons. Mouthfeel is sharp, dry, slightly tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is sour with bread, red wine vinegar, lime juice, hay, dry soil, moist wood, grape juice, and cereal. Pretty so-so...

25 cl. bottle @ home. .Procured from Willems. BBF 03/2015. Dark brown, light Bordeaux red with basically no head. Nose has light vinegar, sour red malts, touch dark cherries, light oak, touch tart & med. quality chocolate, man I had very low expectations about this one but this is actually sour, nice. Taste is light chocolate, fain roast & coffee grounds, ligt vinegar, old touch tart cherry chocolates, lightly tart, malts, chocolate,… Touch oily, bit fizzy, slight lighter body. Expected nothing but this is not bad, sweet & sour balance as the style should have traditionally. Not overly impressive but quite enjoyable never the less.

6/3/7/4/14 25 cl bottle from ABS Drinks. Tangy aroma, chocolate, cherries, green apple, a bit of vinegar. Relatively tame. Dark brown with orange tints and a high, fine head. Nicely tangy flavor, chocolate, yogurt, orange, lactic acid, a touch of vinegar. Relatively sweet and malty for the style, but not in a cheap way. Not all that exciting, but nice drinking. Some roasted chocolate and tangy sourness in the finish. Light, smooth body, soft carbonation.

Bottle split at JF’s, cheers James - 21/07/13. Reddish brown with a big ole light beige head. Nose is tarte berry fruits, soured raspberries, tarte cherries. Taste comprises oaky notes, soured cherry, bitter raspberries, light funk, touch of sugar. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, tarte light puckering finish, refreshing stuff. Decent Flemish red.

Draft. Cloudy amber brown color, tan edge head. Aroma of softly sour and slightly rotted prunes and dusty plums. Taste starts as sweet stewed prunes, then softly sour plums. Not bad.
