Tradition meets progress with this classic beer. The flavour of Liefmans Oud Bruin, dating back to 1679, is derived from special malts matured in open vats and matured for between four and eight months. The fermentation is then restarted by mixing older and younger beers together, leading to a more balanced and consistent flavour.

Tap @ The Mayor Foco. Dark reddish violet appearance with an off white head. Tangy plum, blackberry, lightly vinous, tart dark fruity aroma. Tart black cherry, blackberry, tangy, fruity flavor. Not bad.

Sample at the Beer Trappe in Lexington. The beer is a dark brown color with a medium tan head that diminishes slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of tart fruit and sweet malt. Medium body with flavors of mildly sour fruit, earthy malt and caramel. The finish is fruity with a lingering tart aftertaste. Decent overall.

It’s easy to overestimate what you’re going to get with this beer; yes, it’s a sour ale, but look at the description: lightly acidic. The bottle is not a font of tartness. The main flavors are very Belgian and Brown in the European sense of the style, with caramel/fig malts and a spicy yeast undertone. The finish grows a touch of a vinegar-laced sour streak, but this sourness doesn’t do much other than bring out a modest green apple finish. Too much fruit, and too sweet for its "lightly acidic" soul.

Dark brown beer with a weak but lasting, beige head. Aroma is interesting and lusting, cherries, some sourness and redwine vinegar, dark fruits and hint of iron. Taste is berry, very sour, balsamico and barnyard. Quite full bodied, slightly sticky but same time also lot of carbonation. Very tastefull beer, enough of complexicity and sourness.

[3/4/11] Bottle at the brewery in Oudenaarde. Hazy brown with a beige head. Aroma of caramel, wood, some fruits and some lactic acid. Sweetish-sourish flavor with malt, caramel, fruits and some woody notes. Medium-bodied. OK but too sweet.

Clear purple to dark brown beer. Beige small head, little adhesive and non stable. Aroma: chocolate, mocha, fresh red fruits. MF: light carbon, pretty light body, bit watery texture. Taste: sour, fruity, toast and slight caramel, citrus and apple skin. Aftertaste: gentle lemony balanced out by the right amount of sweet. Pretty good, but of course not even up to the ankles of Goudenband.

25cl bottle at home, purchased at plan-b cloudy with small sediment floaties, fine small offwhite thick head, some lacing. first note in the aroma is sour, then comes dark fruits, faint sweetness.raisins, slight acidity. aroma changes a lot as it warms up. flavor is fruity sour which dominates, also citrus, raisins, dark fruits. quite refreshing this one, the sourness is fresh fruity, not at all stale. ends as it tastes, but with a little more citrus.
