Inspired by a resurrected style from the Flemish region of Belgium, The Meddler Oud Bruin is a blend of several generations of brown ales that were barrel aged for over 18 months. Wild yeasts, Lactobacillus, and Brettanomyces meddle with the beer creating complexity and depth of flavor. Intricate, yet balanced, The Meddler has an 8.9% ABV.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head that falls into a blanket of foam after a minute. Aroma is extremely woody with notes of caramel and vanilla; has an undercurrent of dark fruits and barnyard funk. Taste is sweet and tart, but not mouth-puckering--itβs more reminiscent of Duchesse De Bourgogne than something like La Folie; finishes dry. Mouthfeel is a little on the foamy side with a full body. I like it.

Bomber from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO. Pours cola color with a slight beige head. Sturdy sour aroma. Med body. Flavor is woody, winey and sour. Maybe a little hint of chocolate. Finishes very, very laid back and tasty.

~10 oz draft at Martin City Brewing Company. The pour is hazed brown with some ruby around the edges of the glass. The head is tan and lasting. Nice, thick coat of lace left behind as the head falls. The aroma is softly sour vinegar, nice full black cherry fruit, and light wood funk underneath that. The taste is soft acetic vinegar blended nicely with the natural black cherry fruit. The wood and funk is present in the long finish. The palate is medium to light bodied, soft natural carbonation, nice sour black cherry long finish. Nice.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a medium white head. A woody fruity nose with some glue. A light dusty sourness throughout, some cherries and brown malt. Light dry brett.

A really dark pour, looks black to me, with a 1 finger head of foam with some great lacing.
I get a big fruity tartness on first smell, second smell..some hints of chocolate and vanilla. Blimey, the label mentions the latter 2.
Fruity/vinegar sourness and vanilla up front in the taste. Some sugary sweetness mixed in there that is nice but confuses my palate somewhat. It finishes sour and gives me a blast of the alcohol.
On the upper end of medium bodied with lively carbonation, itβs a good mouthfeel here and is pretty drinkable.
I think this is a very good take of, based on my limited experience with, the style. Itβs surely worth a try.

Tap @ Odell. Pours a hazy reddish brown appearance with a cream colored head. Oaky, dark grape, vanilla, tart, acetic, interesting aroma. Somewhat acidic, vinegar, chewy woody, plum, grape, tannic flavor. Pretty tasty but nothing overly special (and I definitely prefer Friek to this).
