The jewel in our crown was celebrated, many years in advance, by the prescient Jem Casey, Poet of the Pick and Bard of Booterstown, when he remarked that when “…no rashers grease your pan / A pint of plain is yer only man.” We agree and we’re not alone. Our Plain Porter – porter is a lighter version of stout – is a double gold medal winner. Its subtly aromatic, a silky, round mouthful with a touch of bitterness kicking in at the finish.

Draft (4,3%) at The Porterhouse in Dublin. Very dark brown with a reddish hue, almost black. Nice creamy beige head. Lots of malt in the aroma, roasted malt and hints of hops. Medium body. Creamy and malty stout with a nice, slightly bitter finish. Easy to drink, very tasty and quite delicious. (2011-06-11)

Nitro-draught at The Wharf, Aalborg, as Porterhouse Dublin Porter, 4.3% ABV
Dark brown color, almost black, with creamy nitrogen head. Mild aroma of roasted malts. Smooth texture, roasted malt flavor and black chocolate, some burnt feeling too; the final is dry.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a reddish tinge and a strong head, but soon disappearing. The aroma is mildly roasted and the flavour is very deeply roasted with a long dry and bitter finish. Overall a nice drinkable roasted and dry beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Keg at the Porterhouse, Covent Garden. Pitch black with an attractive ruby red tint and a tight cream head; chocolate aroma; smooth with a milky body, but far too cold, so only a light dry chocolate taste is discernable. Satisfying overall, but needs warming up!

330 ml bottle with tear-off cap, from Ølkonsortiet, Aalborg. ABV is 5%. Very dark brown to black colour, large beige head. Roasty aroma with notes of mild coffee and dark chocolate, a hint of wood and bonfires, also hints of hops. Very nice roasty flavour, fairly dry, notes of coffee, hints of dark bitter chocolate and wood, decent hops throughout. Not extreme in any way, just well balanced and highly drinkable.
