The jewel in our crown was celebrated, many years in advance, by the prescient Jem Casey, Poet of the Pick and Bard of Booterstown, when he remarked that when “…no rashers grease your pan / A pint of plain is yer only man.” We agree and we’re not alone. Our Plain Porter – porter is a lighter version of stout – is a double gold medal winner. Its subtly aromatic, a silky, round mouthful with a touch of bitterness kicking in at the finish.

Sample at Porterhouse Central. This beer is a dark brown color with a medium beige head that diminishes slowly to a film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and hops. Light body with a roasty character and flavors of chocolate malt, coffee and slight hops. The finish is burnt malt and coffee. Decent overall.

Whisky/Bourbon zymatore, so I guess not so plain. Draft, thank you Tyler. Very dark brown color, thick brown head, solid lacing. Aroma of roasty vanilla and coffee. Taste is boozy chocolate and coffee.

330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with beautiful tan head and lacing. Aromas of caramel, cardboard, and biscuits. Clean, light flavors of roasted malt, dried biscuits, and hops. Plain but nice.

330 ml bottle @ Cardinal. Dark brown, almost black body with a big, lasting beige head. Moderate in aroma, dark malt, toast and mild roast. Flavor is relatively light roasted, some fruit and a light, almost sharp bitterness. Medium body, but the malt flavor feels a bit light, almost watery. Aftertaste is not particular sweet, neither “porter sour” and not much bitterness. Easy and smooth to drink, and it is really a plain porter.

Fra flaske på Cardinaltreff: litt sødme i aromaen, ganske tørr smak, men god munnfylde. Lettdrikkelig og med god balanse. Flott skum. En meget bra porter.

Grape & Gourmet, VA Beach 330ml ($4ish): Pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, and licorice. Taste is more like a stout than a dry stout in my opinion. The smoke and ash are prevalent. This doesn’t have the same swiggability as something like Guinness, and it is certainly heavier and more complex. This wasn’t bad, but it was hardly my favourite.
