A special brew on the occasion of the opening of the abby tower in Sint-Truiden on May 1, 2005. This triple has a somewhat darker (orange like) colour and a slightly fuller taste than our Kerckomse Tripel, if only to clarify that these are two completely different Triple beers. What makes Adelardus Tripel so special, is the use of so-called ‘gruut’. This is a mixture of about 10 different indigenous herbs.

ABV used to be 9%

An orange and murky beer, a head is very small and blond. Aroma has strong fruitness, mainly of dried fruits but also some fresh fruits, apple, perry, apricot, banana, some spices. Taste has fruitness, fructose, low spicyness. No alcohol. Some dry spicyness in the end. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Good tripel, fruitness is the main point.

Frothy off white head stayed well leaving a good cover on a slowly carbonating tea coloured body. Big aroma of banana, Belgian yeast, stewed fruit & malt. Medium bodied, minimal carbonation, sticky over the palate & a cloying aft. Sweet tastes of over stewed fruit, sugar, banana, spices & quite boozy on the finish. Not my favourite style of Tripel & in fact this tastes like a hybrid Tripel/Barley Wine.

hazy orange colour, large, though not too stable off-white head; aroma of linden honey, grains, some clove, apple and hints of unripe plum (?); taste of linden honey sweetness, sweet canned apple and slight clove notes; good one

330 ml bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden amber/light orange color with a 1 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon, orange, peach, apricot, pear, apple, mango, melon, light white pepper, honey, cracker, bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, peach, apricot, pear, apple, mango, melon, light white pepper, honey, cracker, bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate yeast spiciness, and light herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, orange, peach, apricot, pear, apple, mango, melon, white pepper, honey, cracker, bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/creamy, and fairly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is a very nice Tripel. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Really well balanced between yeast and malts, with a nice complex yeast flavor profile. Probably a couple years old judging by the protein haze and slightly darkened malt/appearance; but it held up really well. A very enjoyable offering.
