Brewed since 1907, when the near-complete staff of the brewery went to see the circus of Buffalo Bill, leaving the boiling brewing kettle to the care of the youngest employee. This boy let the beer roast and caramelise on the bottom of the kettle, but after trying, everybody actually liked the "spoiled" beer, which became the brewery’s staple diet.

Dark mahogany color; persistent thin head. The aroma is a bit vinous, but also smells like rotten grapes. The flavor is smooth, with some sweetness, and just a touch of woody complexity, not enough, no fruitness nor sourness. Not my kind.

Bottle. Very dark brown with a thick, but short lived, off-white head. There was plenty of carbonation to start but this died away quickly. Aroma of caramel & dark fruits with roasted notes. Flavour started sweet before an earthy, dry finish with warming alcohol. Unusual and enjoyable.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown with thick creamy head. Smell was sweet and taffy/caramel. The taste was very sweet malt.

Bottled. Dark amber colour, small beige head. Alcohol and plum in flavour and aroma, quite pleasant mix. Also a lot of caramel malts and some slight sugaryness. Flavour is caramel malts, very sweet with not too much hops noteable. Sticky palate. Some hints of apricot found in aftertaste.

(Bottle 25 cl) 5,7% ABV in my version. Dark brown, but far from black. Small tan head. Roasted almost burned malty notes and distinctively dry with a very light body. Actually rather refreshing. Never really considered this a Stout though. 260598

Dark ruby color, small tanned head, lots of floatign yeast. Citric nose, underlying berries and malts. Carbonated mouthfeel. Candy sugar, roasted malts. Quite simple, sweet and watery.

Bottled. Clear ruby. Buttery aroma with some blackberries. Sweet and rounded, fairly roasty with clean mouthfeel and low hop rate. Drier finish. An easy going, well balanced ale.

Hint of liquorice aroma. Very dark brown colour. Light brown head. Hint of malt, OK sweetness, attempted balanced by a bit of tarty sourness.

A deep red beer with a disappearing off-white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of yeast and berries as well as hints of caramel. The flavor is dry sweetness with notes of berries and wood.

(draught) Very dark brown. Brownish-yellow head, lacey. Very little nose. Bit of brown sugar, vague coffee aroma. Taste is quite woody. Very slight lactic and a bit yeasty too. Malty underbuild, roasted but not burnt. Light bodied but not watery thanks to the malt. The bottled version is denser - both Tim Webb and me agreed upon this immediately (rare!). Nice, for a light beer. Nothing to get raving about, but a lot more original than the latter-day Pater Lieven series. Half-way between a Flemish sour brown and a top-fermenting Munich Dunkles.
