Bottled at Bishops Arms, Gothenburg. 215 SEK is a rip-off, but I just had to sample it. It pours hazy, with some sediments, orange-golden color and some beige head. The aroma has an almoste gueuze-like sourness, notes of alcohol, yeast and yellow apples. A complex aroma that I could sniff for hours. Pity the flavor isn’t in the same league. It has sourness and acidity and some spices, but it is a bit boring. Thin, slightly sour, dry mouthfeel. The beer feels a bit dead, except for the aroma, which is just lovely. (060825)

(Bottle at Bishops Arms, Västra Hamngatan, Gothenburg on August 25) Very hazy murky dark orange to brown color, white head. Sour a bit spicy scent, not as "original" Orval at all! Very much similar to a gueuze, in the smell still. A bit watery mouth feel. Sour, but watery, taste. Low to no bitterness.

Bottle, Ange Gardien at 100 m from the Abbey. Cloudy orange golden color, big off-white head. Aroma is bit fruity, some bubblegum, typical Orval but bit weaker. Also taste is typical Orval, but a bit weaker. Easy to drink that way, and as Orval is one of my favorite beers, I like this one too.

This and the Chimay Black are the most exceptional out of the Monks beer. I have no idea why Westmalle Extra is rated the highest of the three. Med Amber color, spicy nose, grains of paradise, oranges, bubblegum erupt from the nose. The mouth is much more subdued than Orval. It smooth, but retains a high degree of complexity. A dry orangey finish is similar to Orval. I just realized this is only 3.5%, WOW what complexity for its size! Very impressive

Bottle at London Gathering Nov 05. Funny. I didn’t particularly like Orval when I first had it, and I didn’t particularly like this either. Perhaps it will grow on me. Copper colour with thick tight beige head. Slightly sour, marmalade aroma. Bit thin in mouth. Overly carbonated and the flavours were all a bit watery

Yellow golden, not much head. Citrusy, horse blanket nose - watered Orval aroma. Citrusy, lemony, weak little brother of Orval. Add enough water to normal Orval and you have this one.

(Bottle 33 cl) This younger brother to the real Orval is apparently only available in the café next to the abbey - and only aimed at everyday consumption for the monks. Trying this in a tasting with the original this seems to be just a dilluted Orval. All the same wonderful herbal notes are there - only weaker. And expectedly both head and hoppiness are lower. Hence it’s a surprise that the colour is actually a darker amber than the oroginal. Hmm...so much for my dillution theory. Very easy to drink. Yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle. For all it’s worth, even this weak Orval is still a unique experience. No label. 230105

This beer is more widely known as Orval Vert . Orange-amber, slight haze; huge off-white head. Typical but very intense grapey Orval nose, hops (dry), leather, Brett - including horsey finish - bit of lunaria, herbal-spicey. Bone dry - but light - fruity, grapey taste, rosewater flavour without the sweetness, different herbal flavours, slightly grassy. Quite light MF, but more filled than expected. Watery feeling as fine spring water. Ultra-long typical hop aftertaste (more taste/flavour than bitterness). Very strangely a very pleasing beer. Something to raise (healthy) children on. Or Brits.
