This is our atypical take on an English stout. But our stout is more accessible than its British counterpart because of the sweeter flavour and the less pronounced caramel taste.

BOTTLE 33 CL.
Look: clear deep red-brown, big beige head.
Aroma: lageresque, sulphury aroma, a hint of black malts and toasted bread. A touch of hops.
Taste: sugary sweetness, brown sugar, never really balanced by hop bitterness, as the after taste remain cloying.

Sweet stout completely in compliance with the style as it has been brewed in Flanders for many decades in the 20th century. A dark chestnut beer with sweet, even sugary, malty profile with some candied fruits, straightforward, caramelly, smooth and thin with a very subtle bitterishness in the finish - exactly what English-style sweet stouts were like in the old days. Again: respect for a brewery that seems to have changed nothing about either their range or their beers in fifty years.

Bottle at Beer Passion 2014, Antwerp. Poured a murky dark brown with a frothy off white head and some broken lace. The aroma is roasted malt, skunky, sweet sweaty socks. The flavour is medium sweet with a sweet malt light fruit palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle: Deep chestnut-amber coloured, small - quickly collapsing - off-white loose head; mild to moderate sweetish-roasty nose with traces of caramel; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; moderate sweet-roasty finish-as well; followed by a slight balancing malty bitterness. Tastes not like a Stout; more like an average, souped-up german Malzbier…

330ml bottle at home. Pours clear reddish-brown, thick beige head. Smells sugary, tastes sugary too. More sweet than stout. Sickly. Not good.

How: Bottle.
Where: Café de Wijngaard, Poperinge.
Appearance: Dark red-brown colour with a beige head.
Aroma: Sweet sugar, some malt.
Body: Thin and watery. Ok carbonation.
Flavour: Sweet, some malt. Might be some hints of something else in there that makes it a stout, but it is too well hidden.
Comment: Too artificially sweet and thin. Sure it is a sweet stout, but still there should be some stout in it as well.

Bottle at Delirium Café. Opaque dark brown liquid with small off-white head. Way too pale. Aroma of pumpernickel, bread, sugar (lots of it), banana, british yeast esters and caramel. Taste is very, very sweet and light bitter with notes of pumpernickel, raw sugar and caramel. Light bodied with way too high carbonation. Awful. Way too sweet.

Dark, small head, low carbonation. Is this a stout? I taste only sugar and sweeteners. This is really bad.
