Saison Rue is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned, Belgian/French-style farmhouse ale. This is a beer of subtlety and complexity, with malted rye, spicy, fruity yeast notes, biscuit-like malt backbone and a slight citrus hop character. With age, this beer will dry out and will become more complex with rustic notes of leather and earth from the contribution of a wild yeast strain. Being a saison, Saison Rue is ambiguous unto itself as it is a different beer when fresh and when aged.

Poured from a 5 year old bottle that I lost track of in my cellar. Aroma is sweet with caramel, honey and some burnt sugar. Some light spicy, herbal notes. Light toast. Hints of citrus with a woodsy, herbal, earthy note as well. Some light stone fruit, red apple and pear esters. Pours a hazy, murky brown color with some copper and amber hues and a medium large, fairly thick, slightly tan head that recedes fairly quickly to a thin film that lingers for quite some time. No lacing and faint legs. Flavor is similar to the aroma with a moderately strong sweetness with some light acidity. Quite a bit of caramel with some lighter honey notes and burnt sugar. Some lighter toasted bread and rye notes. A moderate bitterness with a medium light spicy, herbal note. Hints of fruity esters and some citrus. A light earthy note and a hint of alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low, but noticeable alcohol warmth. Overall, this beer is definitely past its prime, but is interesting. Its difficult to tell form the age what it was like fresh and its been a very long time since I had a fresh bottle; probably 2011. The age is off putting, but also enticing so its just weird. I was expecting more funk, but there is very little. Instead, the malt dominates the flavor and aroma.

Draft at the source on 6/26/2016. Golden with a white head. Heavy lacing. Aroma is funk, wild yeast, some fruitiness. Taste is similar to nose, with some spiciness. A touch of white pepper. Overall, it’s a bit more bland than expected.

Location: 750ml bottle from Hoboken Vine, 1/10/16
Aroma: The aroma is rye malt and spices, some yeast, a bit of fruit, lighter aroma overall
Appearance: It pours an unclear amber-orange color with a beige head and some spotty lacework
Flavor: Tastes very clean, light sweet, lightly tart too, light-medium bitter, spice finish
Palate: Lighter bodied, with average carbonation, and just an overall very clean mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Thought this was an interesting beer in the fact that the rye and spice were really the majority of what came through in both flavor and aroma. As I let it warm I kept expecting something else to show up like a more pronounced yeast component, funk, some citrus, or something else to really step up, but all those components remain fairly subtle throughout. I really did enjoy drinking this, but overall it is quite subtle. With that subtly comes plenty of respect from me, as there's nothing to cover any flaws and there aren't any flaws present. This one is made to be drank not pondered, and there ain't nothing wrong with that. Super drinkable. I'd have believed this was anywhere from 4% up. At 8.5% clearly this is a dangerous one. If your looking for something that drinks like a table beer with twice the alcohol this is a great choice.
