Saison Rue is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned, Belgian/French-style farmhouse ale. This is a beer of subtlety and complexity, with malted rye, spicy, fruity yeast notes, biscuit-like malt backbone and a slight citrus hop character. With age, this beer will dry out and will become more complex with rustic notes of leather and earth from the contribution of a wild yeast strain. Being a saison, Saison Rue is ambiguous unto itself as it is a different beer when fresh and when aged.

As The Bruery Saison Rue, 75 cl bottle at 9.5% ABV, is this really the same beer like the site claims? Anyway: an attempt at strong saison by this famed brewery, pouring a beautifully warm and deep, glowing peachy orange blonde colour, lightly hazy, misty with deposit, bearing a firm, lacing, off-white head, thinning under influence of the alcohol but still retaining well. Aroma has a lot of blood orange, rosehip tea, freshly fermented farmland, a weird chlorine-like smell, moscatel wine, marmelade, vanilla, cognac, galanga, overripe or even almost rotting peach and a whiff of pink grapefruit. Candied orange sweetness in the mouth, strawberry jam and honey sweetness as well, lean and supple body, bit bready and oily, caramelly malt sweetness, finishing in herbal hoppiness, bittering but gently so, with primarily lingering caramel malt sweetness, juicy, paired with noticeable alcohol heat, brandy- and liqueur-like, but not becoming astringent. Interesting and characterful beer, very rich sipper, but closer to a Belgian-style barley wine (if such a thing exists) than to actual saison. But then, how is saison even defined these days? I am still pondering about that, now that every serious brewery in the western world seems to have one...

750 mL bottle from 2013. Pours a somewhat murky golden amber with a white head. Red apple aroma, slightly tart, with some warm cinnamon spice. Apple flavor, again lightly tart, some candied flavor, a little yeast, tartness, brettiness, and again a bit of ginger or cinnamon. Really quite tasty.

Lekkert balansert.

Shared bottle at Mi2 at Cardinal 23.03.15. A gusher. Clear golden. Foamy, dense and persistent off-white head and lacing. Quite refreshing aroma, with a hint of flowers, fresh pear and brett. Similarly fruity taste with more bitterness. Complex aftertaste. A bit fizzy.

A dark yellow, slightly reddish beer with a big and blond head. Aroma is unique, strongly sweet fruits, fructose, some marshmellows and mandarin, hint of sourness. Taste is rich, fruitness with some darker notes, spicyness of rye, hint of sweet marshmellows. Almost full bodied, strong carbonation, not saison like lightness. Quite unique flavours, good. Sweet and fruity.

Dba, NOLA: bottle. It pours copper with a small white head. Aroma is brett funk, vinegar, sugar, fruit pie. Taste is slughtly tart and quite funky. The sugar is nice and does not add too much sweetness, but there are notes for sure. The mouhfeel pinches in that tangy way. Quite good chea.
