Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time.

Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings.

This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast.

Courtesy of fishingnet. Pours clear golden. Aroma is spicy, perfumy with anis. Taste is very sweet, loaded with interesting spices and herbs anis, ginger, rosemarin. Ligh malt. Reall wish the Germasn would come out with more interesting beers such as this one.

Courtesy of fishingnet. Pours very pale gold with faint haze and bright white head. The aroma is vibrant, bold and perfumy. Wow. I get bay leaves, anise, rosemary, assorted spices, flower pedal notes and a hodgepodge of lighter and less discernable aromatics. The taste is big, crisp, refreshing and just plain good. I get the bay leaves as noted in the nose to go along with mild lemon notes, rosemary, anise and orange peel. The flavor has a lot going on. Lively tasty and well crafted brew. Makes me wonder why there aren’t more out there like this.

I love it when brewers try something different, or in this case, an historic style seldom seen today. Complex aroma. Mint, grass, wheat, some yeast, and malt. Cloudy yellow color and a surprisingly complex flavor with lemon, ginger and wheat. It tastes very fresh. Medium palate. Overall there is an herbal, wildflower character. Very nice. Refreshing.

Cloudy gold, witbier-looking ale - there is some wheat, citrus and grass in the aroma, but the smell is mostly dominated by a strong cocktail of spices and herbs (ginger, anise, and rosemary are most prominent, but there are some notes of thyme and mint leaves) - fairly tart, nearly sour up front, followed by a soft wheaty character that lays the foundation for the spices to come to the fore - ginger, rosemary and thyme are fairly strong components, buy there is a bitter herb I can’t place, and the bay becomes noticeable near the end - some peppery character arrives late - I can see how people would be put off by this, but I love food with complex spice combinations (like indian food), and this would go really well with stuff like that.

Pour is a lemonaid lookalike with a small white head. Aroma is of super amounts of spice. What spice? All of them. I could not even begin to name them all. Flavor is a bit weaker and watery. You deffinatly get your spice but nothing like the aroma. It leaves a prickly floral on the tounge as this goes down. This will be deffinalty something you have never had before.

Very cloudy pale white body with a small frothy white head. Very citrusy aroma with tons of spice, especially rosemary. Citrus flavor, light lemon, more rosemary as a fairly dominant flavor, light ginger more to the background. Medium light body with moderate carbonation.
