Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)

Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Sample. Appearance: brown with a dark beige head. Aroma: American oak, some sweetness, and chocolate. Taste: lots of dark fruits, whiskey, some roasted malts, moderately sweet. Finishes with lots of whiskey notes. Overall: quite interesting.

12oz bottle on 11th July 2023, my nightcap (at my daughters place in Laguna Hills). Black bodied, light brown head that hung around. Malty aroma with a whiskey sideshow, taste also malty and whiskey flavoured, pretty sweet and decadent (32 IBU's on my bottles label, have they changed the recipe I wonder). Anyway I really enjoyed it.

(Bottle) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of sweet espresso, dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla, bourbon, and light hints of wood. Malty, roasted taste with strong sweet coffee, dark chocolate, cacao, liquorice, burnt sugar, vanilla, bourbon, aged rum, wood, raisins, dark fruit and a balanced roasty bitterness in a slightly vinous finish. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and solid imperial stout with a balanced whiskey touch. Alcohol evident, but fairly well overshadowed by everything going on. Very nice.

Bottle as Smokestack Imperial Stout 2014. Sampled in 2019. Black body under a samll but dense beige head. Nice aroma of dark malt and caramel with mild whisky and hint of vanilla. Pleasant alcohol. Taste is smooth, mild roasted dark malt, dry fruit, caramel, wood, whisky and warming alcohol. Fine body and long-lasting aftertaste. Super pleasant.

Pretty average and indistinguishable, but still really nice. Much better than this ridiculous movie Midsommar.

Bottle pour from Total Wine & More, Burlington. Appearance is opaque black with no sparkle, finger-width light brown head after vigorous pour with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is strong roasted malt, chocolate, barrel and milder whiskey. Taste is roasted malt, whiskey, dark fruit and tart fruit. Mouthfeel is medium side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste with mildest of alcohol warmth. Overall, nice elements but there is a tart quality that I'm not the biggest fan of. Still good but not great.
