Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout (Smokestack Series - formerly known as Imperial Stout)
Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Helt svart med lys brunt skum. Lukter Kaffe, kakao og noe alkohol. Smaker av stenfrukt, salt lakris og herlig fyldig konsistens. Bitter lang ettersmak.

330 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with short tan head. Aromas of sweet whiskey, coconut, dark sugar and toasted malts. Thinner flavors follow same. Still jive but not as tasty and complex as previous years. 8/4/8/3/15 750 ml bottle. 2013 vintage. Pours black with a full tan/yellow head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of burnt toast, heavily roasted malts and espresso. Flavors of oily coffee and black chocolate with a little sharpness (rye?) and faint watery smoky alcohol notes. Long acidic coffee finish and good carbonation. Interesting. 9/4/8/3/16

Pours black with a somewhat weak head.
Roasted aroma with notes of soy sauce, smoke, anise, char coal and a little bit of Bourbon.
Smooth mouth feel.
Somewhat sweet taste with notes of roasted malt, toffee, licorice, Bourbon and oak casks leading to a warming alcohol finish.

Bottle courtesy of Yoachim. Pours dark blackish brown with a frothy mocha head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty with roasted malts, salty liquorice candy, charred wood, coffee, chocolate, soil and hay. Taste is sweet, bitter, salty, malty and estery with roasted malts, burnt cookies, charred wood, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, soil and hints of banana bread. Mouthfeel is soft, round and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny salty and bitter with roasted malts, burnt cookies, salty liquorice, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, charred wood and toasted nuts. Powerful black color with a small tan head. Oak, chocolate and toffee aroma. A bit rich and fizzy carbonation destroys the feeling. Probably a full body. Tasty stuff apart from the fizzy carbonation. Oak, vanilla, raisins and coffee.

Finally able to nab this one. As I missed out on it last Spring when it showed up on growler at the Breeze In. Luckily, it came back around and here’s my take on this one.
Out of a grumbler from Breeze In (Lemon Creek location, Juneau AK). This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a soft and somewhat refined bubbly off white to slight tan slim head. This head died within about less than forty seconds. The lacing was there in a slightly weird messy way, but it was there.
The smell started off with a boozy roasty coffee cocoa sort of blend. As it warmed, a light plum entered in.
The taste was mainly boozy and sweet but did have a decent roasty quality about it.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with more of a sipper aspect to it. The carbonation was slightly there but allowed a decent harshness to pervade.
Overall, I say this was a good Imperial Stout it draws out all of the aspects as any Imperial Stout should. This would make a great night capper.
